CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Rustic cabins dot the landscape surrounding Coralville Lake, offering visitors enclosed shelters with varying amenities. Palisades-Kepler State Park provides cabin accommodations with electricity and basic furnishings, while Beyonder Getaway at Sleepy Hollow features cabins located near the fishing pond with running hot and cold water. Calyx Creek offers a Creekside Treehouse with more upscale features including heated floors, internet access, loft sleeping arrangements, and full kitchen facilities. Most cabin rentals include air conditioning and heating systems for year-round comfort. "The cabins have everything you need to get away—kitchenette, queen bed, AC, trails, large lavender farm," notes a recent visitor to Calyx Creek.

Several campgrounds maintain year-round operations, though peak cabin availability runs from April through October. Beyonder Getaway offers three cozy cabins capable of accommodating up to nine people, making them suitable for family gatherings or small group retreats. Matsell Bridge Natural Area and Pleasant Creek State Recreation Area maintain cabin options alongside their tent and RV sites. Reservations are typically required well in advance, especially during summer months when availability becomes limited. Some locations like Lake Iowa County Park permit pets in their cabins, while others maintain strict no-pet policies. According to feedback on The Dyrt, "The treehouse is located near lavender farm store and offers heated floors, internet, loft sleeping, heat/AC, kitchen, views."

Bedding arrangements vary significantly between cabins, with most providing beds but requiring guests to bring their own linens, towels and personal items. Kitchen facilities range from fully equipped kitchenettes with refrigerators and microwaves to simple countertop spaces with minimal cooking tools. Little Bear Campground and Hannen County Park offer cabin rentals with access to communal shower facilities and restrooms rather than private bathrooms. Nearby general stores provide basic supplies, though many visitors prefer to bring groceries from larger towns before arriving. Most cabin locations feature outdoor picnic tables and fire rings for cooking and dining. Pinicon Ridge Park and Windmill Ridge include cabins with access to their full campground amenities including sanitary facilities and recreation areas.

    Matsell Bridge Natural Area

Nice little inexpensive primitive site... spaces almost always available

Nice quiet little primitive campground next to the Wapsipinicon River. Unfortunately, when I was there the last weekend of May, the gnats were bad, and the mosquitoes were just starting to gear up. HOWEVER, take bug spray and enjoy the rustic peacefulness of this "best kept secret" for primitive and inexpensive camping sites. Beautiful location, ranger close by, wood for sale just across the bridge, fire pits and picnic tables at every site. Good for RV, trailer or tent camping… level ground and lots of shade. Primitive bathrooms, no showers or running water.

Guide to Coralville Lake

Cabin accommodations around Coralville Lake offer rustic shelter options within eastern Iowa's hardwood forests and prairie landscapes. Most cabin facilities maintain seasonal operations from April through October, with limited year-round availability at select locations. The region typically experiences warm summers with average highs of 85°F and cold winters where temperatures often drop below freezing.

What to do

Hiking terrain options: Several hiking trails wind through Palisades-Kepler State Park, offering varied difficulty levels through wooded areas. "Fun beginner hikes. As a local to the area it's a park I visit often," notes Ryan, a regular visitor to Palisades-Kepler State Park. The park features riverside paths along the Cedar River with scenic overlooks.

Water recreation access: Pleasant Creek State Recreation Area provides numerous water activities on its 410-acre lake. "There is a nice hiking trail around the lake, about 8 miles complete loop. There is a bit of elevation change and not many opportunities to 'bail out' so take water and pace yourself," advises Mitch C. at Pleasant Creek State Recreation Area. The lake permits motorized boats with no-wake zones designated for paddlers.

Wildlife viewing spots: Lake Iowa County Park offers multiple wildlife observation areas throughout its 525-acre property. "We had a blue jay that visited us regularly at our campsite, along with deer walking through. There are wild raspberries and mulberries, lots of wildlife," shares Leslie P. from Lake Iowa County Park. Morning and evening hours provide the best wildlife viewing opportunities.

What campers like

Private tent sites: Matsell Bridge Natural Area offers secluded tent sites with basic amenities for primitive camping. "Good campsite for a mellow weekend. When I visited we were the only campers there and it was awesome!" reports Ryan about Matsell Bridge Natural Area. Sites include fire rings and picnic tables but lack running water.

Clean facilities: Lake Iowa Park maintains well-kept bathroom and shower facilities. "Bathrooms and entire area was really in perfect shape. One of the cleanest showers and bathrooms I have seen. $10 for tent, $16 for electric - how can you go wrong?" notes Randall K. from Lake Iowa County Park. The park offers both flush toilets and pit latrines depending on camping location.

Playground quality: Pinicon Ridge Park features extensive playground equipment suitable for various age groups. "They have the most amazing playgrounds (yes, two of them!) That we've ever seen. There were activities for kids of all ages, and they used a rubber composite on the ground at the playground so when kiddos fall, they aren't injured," explains Chelsea D. from Pinicon Ridge Park. The playgrounds remain open from dawn to dusk.

What you should know

Late arrival procedures: Little Bear Campground allows after-hours check-ins with advance notice. "I called at the last minute. No answer, left a message. Mike called back within 5 minutes! Nice guy, gave us a spot. When we got there, he gave us our choice of 2 spots!" explains Laura F. about Little Bear Campground. After-hours arrivals should call the posted number for site assignment.

Cabin amenity variations: Cabins near Coralville Lake range from basic shelters to upscale accommodations. At Hannen County Park, cabins provide shelter with minimal amenities. "Beautiful relaxing spot. We were in a spot on a hill top," mentions Leslie P. about their cabin experience at Hannen County Park. Cabin guests typically need to bring their own linens and cooking equipment.

Weather considerations: Camping cabins near Coralville Lake require advance planning for extreme weather conditions. "Wife and I met friends here in August. The campground was very well maintained. Be advised though, we were not adequately prepared for the humidity in August. Being from Colorado where we live at much higher altitudes & we didn't expect the humidity to affect us as it did," shares Clifton B. from Lake Iowa Park. Summer humidity regularly exceeds 80% with occasional severe storms.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly waterfront: Beyonder Getaway at Sleepy Hollow provides safe water access for younger children. "This campground oasis planted square in the middle of the 'prairieland' of the Hawkeye State, you'll appreciate that there is a decent-sized lake here that is perfect for a quick dip should you want to get some swimming in and cool down from the blistering Midwestern summer heat," describes Stuart K. from Beyonder Getaway at Sleepy Hollow.

Rainy day options: Several cabin facilities provide indoor recreation alternatives during inclement weather. "There is a nice visitor area. Lots of trails to walk with the dog including a nice trail along the lake," notes Ken G. from Lake Iowa Park. Pack board games and download movies before arrival as internet service varies widely between campgrounds.

Site selection strategy: Choose sites with natural barriers for added privacy and safety with children. "The tent sites are very nice and private. There are waist high prairie flowers between the sites to provide privacy and beauty," reports Ann B. about Pleasant Creek State Recreation Area. Reserve sites away from water features if camping with toddlers.

Tips from RVers

Leveling challenges: RV sites at many campgrounds near Coralville Lake require extra leveling equipment. "The sites were extremely level and clean, electric and water hookups," reports Chelsea D. about Pinicon Ridge Park. However, at Beyonder Getaway, "The land is not flat. The spots are good and most are pull-throughs but some are too short for a 30' camper," advises Erik W.

Electrical supply details: Most RV sites provide 30-amp service with limited 50-amp availability. "Full hookups and showers. Even got a pool. Gas station nearby full of character," notes Todd C. about Little Bear Campground. Bring an adapter if your rig requires 50-amp service as availability varies by campground.

Road condition alerts: Access roads to several campgrounds feature gravel surfaces that may be challenging after rain. "Set well off the main road, the gravel road is well maintained, graded well for easy driveable whee truck, rvs or trailers," states Kim F. about Windmill Ridge Campground. Allow extra travel time if arriving after recent precipitation.
