    Adair City Park

    Great overnight spot

Park was clean and close to highway. Husband said bathrooms were clean enough. Didn't use the showers. Arrived around 10pm on a Tuesday and there were 3 spots left. Not all spots could accommodate big rigs. About 8 sites total with electric and water hookups. $15/night for RVs and $6 for tents. Drop box and dump station by the bathrooms. Police rolled through shortly after we arrived. Safe area now but marker says this is the site of Jesse James first train robbery in July 1873. Would definitely come back if passing through.

    Lakeside Co Park

Nice lake, but run down campsites.

First, there is no dump station! All sites have water and electricity with 20, 30, and 60 amp plugs. The sites are 20 dollars. The campsites located near the entrance are pull-through but need maintenance. The campsites along the lake will support short to medium length RVs or trailers, and all are back in. As of this posting, all are not level and in poor condition. The city of Huneston, Iowa is a few minutes away and has several gas stations and a grocery store.

    Lake Icaria Co Park

    Great place that wasn’t crowded

Very nice place. Full hook up spots were very nice. Easy to get into, plenty of space, fire pit, picnic table, friendly & helpful park officers, lots of activities (hiking, boating, boat rentals, beach, bait shop, close to a race track in Corning, etc). We went the weekend after Memorial Day & there were plenty of spots. Quiet & family friendly. Even have food trucks that serve over by the beach!

    Walnut Woods State Park Campground

Comfortable Camping Convenient To Des Moines

Walnut Woods is conveniently located 25 minutes outside of downtown Des Moines. Sites are paved and mostly level, although we did have to throw a couple of blocks under one side of our TT tires. Most sites feature 20/30/50 electric, a fire ring and a picnic table. Some also have water and sewer hookups. Sites are relatively small and close together, so get comfortable looking into your neighbors’ site/camper depending on how your site is oriented. The road around the campground is paved, but very narrow. We had to ask our neighbor across the street to temporarily move their tow vehicle so that we’d have adequate room to back into our site.

There is a bathroom, trash dumpsters, and a dump station with both potable and tank cleanout water spigots. There are trail heads near the campground that follow along the raccoon river for almost 2 miles. It was very muddy when we camped here, so we had to turn around about 1.5 miles into our hike and backtrack due to an impassible area.

3 bars of T-Mobile and 2 bars of AT&T were more than sufficient for internet browsing and streaming.

    Des Moines West KOA Holiday

    Nice modern KOA

Large modern KOA with sites to accommodate all sizes of rigs and also tent campers. Gravel sites require some leveling. Not much privacy between sites nor shade. Bathhouses were clean and private. Laundry available. Off leash dog area available. Convenient to John Wayne’s birthplace and covered bridges of Madison County. Bulk propane tanks were on site for winter campers. Camper cabins available. Small store with Hunt Brothers pizza to order. Gathering room on site and pedal car racetrack. Verizon cell signal was good. Garbage dumpster and dump station on site.

    Timberline Campground

    Beautiful forested overnight stay

We called ahead to see if they had sites available that night. Arrived just before the office closed at 7pm. They were ready for us and escorted us to our pull-through full-hookups site near the front of the campground. This is a huge property but laid out in different sections that each have their own flavor. The pull-throughs near the front are level, gravel pads with grass all around. Other areas are forested and some are hilly. Full-hookups worked fine. We stayed in site 121, which faces an open grassy area backed by a little forest that echoed with beautiful wildlife sounds in the evening. There are no campground lights except at the restrooms, so it’s great for stargazing! The restrooms were good.

    Eagle Ridge RV Park

    Lovely campground just off I-35

Great place for a quick overnight or longer stay. We were there in very early spring so could not use the swimming pool or small lake but the walks around the area were very nice. We stayed in a long FHU pull-through (the one shown in the picture above) in a Class A. Close to the interstate but not noisy.

    Lake Binder Co Park

    Nice city park; reasonable price

This is a 76 acre lake 1 mile northeast of Corning, Iowa. Electric sites are $20 a night or $800 for the season. There's a dump station and several water spigot. A bathroom with cold running water. There are also several portapotties around the lake. A fire ring and a picnic table at every site. We have seen people catching bass. Boats allowed with Electric motors only.

    Timberline Campground

    Month Family/Work Camp

Great, safe, and quiet campground. Beautiful site on a pond, clean bath houses, cool weekend amenities, and since we came in October, pretty empty after Labor Day during the week.

Owners very easy to work with, propane refill was easy, and payment schedule was convenient.

Overall, would 100% come back to this campground in the future and would love to see it in the summer!

Guide to Creston

Campgrounds near Creston, Iowa offer diverse options beyond traditional RV parks. Within a 60-mile radius, campers find locations with amenities like fishing ponds, hiking trails, and swimming areas. Most parks in this southwest Iowa region remain open from April through October, with several offering water activities during summer months when temperatures typically range from 75-85°F.

What to do

Boating and water recreation: Lake Icaria Co Park, located southwest of Creston, features a marina and boat rentals for lake activities. "Boating of all types, fishing, and trails. There are very nice picnic areas, and the bathrooms or restroom facilities are clean," notes a visitor to Lake Icaria Co Park.

Hiking opportunities: Several parks offer trail systems suitable for day hikes. "Beautiful trees and hiking especially in the fall," reports a camper about Lake Icaria. The nearby Pammel County Park features multiple trails and unique natural features: "Has both shaded and open spots, yurts, trails. There are lots of activities, kids can swim below the ford, canoe starting on one side of the park and loop I'd guess about 3 miles on the middle river to the other side of the park."

Local attractions: Winterset's historic sites are accessible from nearby campgrounds. "Winterset has lots to offer, great town square, farmers market on Saturdays, great car club fills the square every month, Madison county fair, Clark Tower, John Wayne Birthplace and museum, Covered Bridges," mentions a reviewer about amenities near Pammel County Park.

What campers like

Shade availability: Many campers appreciate parks with tree cover during hot summer days. At Shady Brook Camping & RV Adventures, one camper notes, "It was really in a good perimeter of trees and lots of shade and level camp spots. We thought this was a nice little spot and a great price."

Clean facilities: Consistently maintained bathrooms and common areas rank high among camper priorities. At Buffalo Run RV Park, visitors appreciate the "Affordable and quiet" setting, while another reviewer at Lake Icaria mentions, "They had people cleaning the bathrooms constantly (my mom kept pointing out, in awe, that it was 'practically hourly') which was great for tent camping with a large group!"

Concrete pads: Level sites with concrete pads make setup easier, especially for RV sites near Creston, Iowa. "The concrete pads were awesome for leveling our popups, the sites were VERY clean," mentions a Pammel Park visitor, noting the benefit for setup.

What you should know

Seasonal variations: Most campgrounds operate April through October. For winter travelers, options are limited but exist. "Don't pay attention to the highway signs that says they're only open until October, they're working on updating them," advises a visitor to Des Moines West KOA Holiday, one of the few year-round facilities.

Highway noise: Some campgrounds near I-35 experience traffic noise. At Shady Brook, a visitor cautions: "You could literally throw a rock from the entrance and hit a passing semi. Would be a possible extended stay for construction folks. Not for any peace and quite camping."

Water conditions: Lake quality varies seasonally. A Lake Icaria visitor warns, "Beach needs some work and algae in the water but otherwise I'd go again."

Tunnel clearance: RVs and trailers over 12 feet tall need alternate routes at certain parks. At Pammel Park, "If your rig is over 12ft, have to come in the back way."

Tips for camping with families

Swimming spots: Lake Icaria offers designated beach areas popular with children. "It's busy in summer, but well kept. They had people cleaning the bathrooms constantly which was great for tent camping with a large group! It's quiet, beautiful lake, great boating, great swim spot, fun park for kids."

Recreation amenities: Look for campgrounds with multiple activity options. At Eagle Ridge RV Park, visitors appreciate the well-maintained grounds: "Great place for a quick overnight or longer stay. We were there in very early spring so could not use the swimming pool or small lake but the walks around the area were very nice."

Weekend activities: Some campgrounds organize special events. Des Moines West KOA features "many organized weekend activities for families" including "a pool, dunk tank, gem mining, ladder golf, horseshoes, jumping pillow, water balloon wars, basketball and more."

Tips from RVers

Hookup accessibility: Some sites require extra equipment to reach utilities. As noted by a Pammel Park visitor: "There are water hook ups, I just had to use 75 feet of hose to get to it. And the electric I had to use a 30 ft extension cord. Funny, I didn't have either and had to drive 24 miles to Walmart on a holiday to get them."

Pull-through availability: Many RV sites near Creston, Iowa offer easy access pull-through spaces. "Long, level pull thru's and back ins," notes a visitor to Ted's RV Park, which maintains 26 sites with both 30-amp and 50-amp electrical service.

Leveling considerations: Prepare for sites that might require leveling equipment. "The sites have a little concrete pad which makes it easier to level," reports a Pammel Park camper, highlighting how even seemingly level sites may need adjustments.

Reservation timing: Peak season often requires advanced bookings. A Pammel Park reviewer advises: "My only complaint would be all sites can be reserved, so if you don't reserve a site at beginning of the year, you are out of luck. Be nice if there were some first come/first serve."
