    Czechland Lake Recreation Area

Great first come first serve campground

This is a nice small campground that is well taken care of. We stayed at site number 8 which may be one of the more unlevel spots. The passenger side of our 5th wheel was about 7" lower than driver side and rear of fifth wheel was about 3" lower than front before we levelled out.

    Pros:

-Well maintained walking trails that are perfect for dogs

-Most sites have 30 and 50 amp hookups

-Fire rings and picnic tables at most sites

-$18 a night for electric hookups

    -Quiet

    Cons:

    -Some sites are very unlevel

    -No water or dump station

    Louisville State Recreation Area Campground

    Good campground and recreation area

Pretty decent campground that’s suitable for extended stays.

There’s five or so lakes you can fish. One lake has swimming access. Canoe and paddle board rentals. Convenience store on site with firewood and propane tanks. There is an air compressor at the convenience store.

RV sites are electrical only but paved. Restrooms are somewhat clean. Showers are okay but the hot water is nice.

Dump station is clean. Don’t checkout on a Sunday if you don’t want to wait two hours to dump.

    Platte River State Park Campground

Perfect spot to explore Omaha and the Great Plains

Platte River State Park is a beautiful, full service park with plenty of amenities. There are playgrounds and a splash pad for the kids, canoe rentals, and plenty of trails to hike or bike. Sites are concrete pads with full hookups and include a fire ring and picnic table. The campground also has a bathroom and dog park. 5 bars of AT&T @ 120Mbps!

    Arrowhead Park Campground

Great nature, fishing, and camping park.

Arrowhead campground has 60 RV sites that support both 30 and 50 amp hookups. They have several well water stations to take on water and a sewer dump station. There also lots of tent camping sites. All sites come with picnic table and fire ring. There are numerous nature trails to hike ranging from easy to hard. There is also a nice sized lake for fishing, canoeing, and paddle boats. The lake has a boat ram for small fishing boats. Very well maintained, managed, and friendly atmosphere.

    Arrowhead Park Campground

    Easy Family Camping Near Omaha

Our family and another family shared a primitive tent site near the back of the park. We were first and foremost impressed with the freedom we had in choosing our site. Tent camping here is non-reservable, but once you enter the park, you may choose from any spots containing a fire pit outside of RV loops. Tent sites range from lake-front, to playground side, to more private sites on the outer rim of the park. We chose a large, private site at the back of the park. This site was well maintained and had enough space to easily accommodate two families of four. We even had a picnic shelter all to ourselves. Our site was lined by woods and farmland and had a good view of a small pond. The night was full of exciting animal noises from both the nearby farm and pond. Vault toilets were a short walk away with clean shower facilities just a few loops away. The kids enjoyed riding bikes up and down gravel roads, looking for frogs, and playing on the playground. Canoe and paddle boat rental is extremely reasonable. Hiking trails near the park entrance are rugged. The staff was incredibly kind and easy-going, yet attentive. Just a short drive from neighboring towns, this is a good starter campground for families with younger kids. We hope to return in winter to check out the camping cabins.

Lewis and Clark State Park Campground

    Clean & kid friendly

Well kept & family friendly camping in Iowa! We were able to reserve an electric unit (#30) right off the lake and across the road from the large playground (~5 setups for different age groups). We could watch the kids play while getting food ready or preparing a line to throw in the water. Short walk to the very clean restrooms with flush toilets & showers. Will come back!

    Lake Manawa State Park Campground

    Nice metro campground

Large concrete pads with patio and permanently mounted mesh steel picnic table with a fire pit grill on the corner.. Lakeside locations are quite well spaced with a panoramic Lake view. small restroom and shower pair with unisex entry. Quite spartan, but relatively clean. Trees surround the campground, but none provide any campground shade. Entry gate code required, which provides some security. all amenities are available within a limited distance. Some lake activity noises during the day, and depending upon wind, some aircraft traffic, otherwise very quiet.

West Omaha / NE Lincoln KOA Holiday

    Great pizza.

Very friendly and helpful staff. The bathrooms & laundry room are clean,a little outdated. The pull through sites seem to be all gravel/stone. Our back in site had a patio, fire pit and nice patio furniture. Looked like a lot to do for the kids. The camp store is well stocked with RV supplies and parts. After driving all day, then doing laundry it was nice to get a pizza and relax.

    The Premium Sites are FANTASTIC

We stayed here overnight on our way out west, so we didn't have big expectations. We are fairly new to pulling a 5th wheel, so we wanted an easy pull-through site plus we wanted it to be paved. Well there are 2 premium sites - we stayed in site# 89. It was HEAVEN! Not only was it paved, but also had a huge patio with a table and Adirondack chairs, and a fire pit with additional seating. The site was situated such that our "good side" was facing the trees, away from the rest of the campground. We have a 43' 5th Wheel plus our truck, and there was plenty of space. That is the best setup we've had so far. We didn't have time to use any of the amenities, and are not traveling with kids, so I can't speak for how good it was in that regard.

Guide to Honey Creek

Hitchcock County Nature Center offers more than standard RV camping near Honey Creek, Iowa. Located within the unique Loess Hills formation, this area provides distinct hiking terrain with elevations reaching 200 feet above the Missouri River valley. Several campgrounds remain open during winter months when temperatures can drop below freezing, though water service is typically shut off during this season.

What to do

Hiking trails: Hitchcock County Nature Center features extensive trail systems with varying difficulty levels. "The trails are well marked and easy to follow. I was very impressed on the hike in campsites. They already have a nice flat spot for your tent, although I'm a hammock camper," notes Aaron A. The center includes a handicap-accessible boardwalk trail for visitors with mobility concerns.

Archery practice: The archery range at Hitchcock County Nature Center provides target practice opportunities for both beginners and experienced archers. "As a family we go to Hitchcock a few times a year for the hiking and the archery range they have on-site. Both are excellent and a nice escape from the city," shares Pat V.

Educational programming: Seasonal nature programs run throughout the year with special focus on hawk watching during migration seasons. "When I think of 'nature center' I think of a stuffy little cabin with taxidermy. This site is far far more than that, with hiking trails, educational programs, a museum, event halls, and of course camping," says Lynn G. Programs frequently focus on wildlife conservation and Loess Hills ecology.

What campers like

Backcountry campsites: The primitive hike-in sites at Hitchcock County Nature Center offer secluded camping with scenic views. "My preference is getting one of the campsites on the western edge of the park on top of the ridge. At night you can see the Omaha skyline lit up and the breeze running through there is wonderful," writes Matt S. These sites feature pea gravel tent pads and established fire rings.

Clean facilities: On-Ur-Wa RV Park maintains exceptionally clean restrooms and shower facilities. "Bathrooms and showers are clean. One of our party is in a wheelchair and had no problem accessing the showers or bathroom," notes Maggie C. The park's accessibility features accommodate visitors with mobility requirements.

Proximity to attractions: Ashland RV Campground provides easy walking access to downtown amenities. "It is close to main street Ashland, which offers gourmet coffee (Fariner Bakery was my favorite), and a couple of restaurants," reports Andrew D. The location serves as a convenient base for exploring nearby attractions while maintaining campground amenities.

What you should know

Seasonal operations: Most rv campgrounds near Honey Creek, Iowa operate on limited schedules. "We RV camped in the lower spots on a hill, be prepared to level out farther than usual," noted one visitor. Bluffs Run RV Park at Horseshoe Casino has specific seasonal restrictions: "I arrived February 28 to visit the casino and friends in town. I couldn't figure out where to check in so I called the number on the website. Turns out the RV parking is closed for the winter," explains Lisa C.

Noise considerations: Highway and railroad noise affects several camping areas. "Interstate was RIGHT THERE..... but the noise of our AC downed it out!" reports Susan W. about Bluffs Run RV Park. Train whistles and truck traffic create regular noise patterns at several campgrounds, particularly during early morning hours.

Check-in procedures: Self-registration is common at several locations during off-peak seasons. "Stopped late after a long 12 hour drive. I loved the simple self service process. We picked an open spot, paid, and parked," shares Abby W. about her experience at Hitchcock County Nature Center.

Tips for camping with families

Nature education opportunities: Sunset at Blue Oasis RV Park provides family-friendly amenities including a seasonal pool. "Pool and family area won't open until May, but look inviting to guests," notes Toni S. This complements nearby Lewis and Clark State Park's educational exhibits about the historic expedition.

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature children's play areas near specific campsites. "I stayed at site #22 because it is close to the playground and is a full hookup site," mentions Andrew D. about Ashland RV Campground. These designated family areas help keep children within sight while providing entertainment options.

Geocaching activities: Geocaching opportunities exist within walking distance of several campgrounds. "To entertain my kids (ages 6-12), there were several geocaches to find within walking distance, and the town has a splash pad and pool during the summer months," reports a visitor to Ashland RV Campground.

Tips from RVers

Leveling requirements: Bob Hardy RV Park offers affordable camping with some site limitations. "Decent park and great price! We stayed 2 nights for my husband to do a job down the road," says Wendy M. Many Honey Creek area rv campsites require additional leveling equipment due to uneven terrain or sloped parking areas.

Dump station availability: Free dump stations exist at select locations for those camping without full hookups. "Single free dump station as well. $15 / night for RV spot. $10 / night tent spots. 5 day max. Pay at the bath house, no host on site," notes Jacob T. about Bob Hardy RV Park. Most dump stations close during winter months when freezing temperatures occur.

Site selection strategy: When staying at campgrounds near Honey Creek, choose sites away from highway-facing sections for reduced noise. "This basically a parking lot with rv hook ups, for the casino people. It is probably a cool place for someone spending a lot of time in casinos," mentions Tony B. Sites further from roadways typically provide quieter camping conditions.
