Within Volga River State Recreation Area, Albany Campground provides established camping with full hookups along the forested river corridor. The Iowa DNR manages this drive-in facility, though campers should expect rough access roads leading to the sites. Electric, water, and sewer connections serve RVs, while tent campers can access the same amenities including restrooms, showers, and picnic tables.
The campground allows pets and campfires, with nightly rates ranging from $14-26 depending on site selection. Fishing and kayaking opportunities center on the nearby Volga River, while hiking trails and cross-country skiing extend recreation into the surrounding forest. Reservations help secure preferred sites during peak seasons.
Description
The Albany Campground has equestrian and non-equestrian campsites. The equestrian campsites all have electrical hook-ups. The non-equestrian sites are non-modern with non-electric sites. There is a water hydrant for the non-equestrian campsites. There is water and vault toilets but no showers. A portion of the area is available for equestrian campers and those sites have hitching posts.
Volga River State Recreation Area is located in one of the most scenic parts of the state. Northeast Iowa is often referred to as "Little Switzerland" because of its rugged topography, rock outcroppings and forest cover - a sharp contrast to the rolling hills, farmland and scattered stands of timber found in the majority of the state. The heavily wooded, rugged area of Volga River is an exciting setting for a variety of outdoor recreation activities throughout the year.

(Posted 10/15/2026) Equestrian Trails are currently in all weather status. Open trails include Depot, Ridge, Albany, and a section of Frog Hollow. All other trails are closed. If you have any questions, please call the park office at 563-425-4161.
The Shower building in Lakeview campground and modern restroom at the Lake will be closed Monday, October 19th. Water to the Lakeview and Albany Campgrounds will be turned off Monday, November 2, 2026 as part of the winterization process. This bulletin will be removed when the water is turned back on for the 2026 camping season.
All campgrounds are 100 percent reservable and accepts reservations until 10:00 pm CST the day of arrival. The Albany campground is open year round and the Lakeview campground is open April 1 - November 15.
The Lakeview campground is closed each year from November 16 - March 31.
