Prairie-Side Parking in a Bustling College Town

Set on the north side of DeKalb along busy Sycamore Road, this oversized Walmart Supercenter offers a wide, sprawling parking expanse that feels equal parts suburban strip mall and open prairie escape. Just minutes from Northern Illinois University (NIU) and surrounded by farmland, this spot blends convenience with an unexpected dose of Midwest quiet once the evening settles in. Despite a steady flow of shoppers during the day, the lot’s sheer size means you can always find a private corner, especially along the western and northern perimeters where traffic evaporates and the horizon opens up. Clean pavement, bright lighting and an easygoing small-town vibe make this an excellent overnight choice for road-trippers drifting across north-central Illinois.

HIGHLIGHTS: (1) Huge, well-maintained lot that makes it easy to park far from the action;(2) Excellent lighting and strong sense of safety thanks to its suburban-but-quiet surroundings; (3) Western and northern edges offer the best solitude and the lowest traffic; (4) Quick access to Sycamore Road’s full lineup of stores including Target, Lowe’s, Jewel-Osco and Best Buy; (5) Close to plenty of dining options ranging from Raising Cane’s and Five Guys to Ellwood Steak & Fish House; (6) Fantastic coffee nearby at Cast Iron Coffee for a morning caffeine fix; and (7) Incredibly flat terrain - but to be clear, this is Illinois doing what Illinois does best - for easy leveling and maneuverability.

LOWLIGHTS: (1) Activity near the storefront can be busy during peak hours; (2) It sits in a large commercial corridor, so you’ll see a steady trickle of cars from surrounding shops;(3) Zero shade anywhere on the lot; (4) Not much character - this is a practical stop, not a scenic one; and (5) Student traffic can spike during NIU events or weekends.

Happy Overnighting!

Parking in the Prairie @ This Big Blue Retailer

You’ll find this parking lot to be of the over-sized varieties of Walmart paved paradises, conveniently located just right off of Sycamore Road, which is one of the major roadway arteries running through Dekalb.  When we arrived here, we were immediately overwhelmed by the sheer size of the place, which by all accounts was more than half empty … and that suited us perfectly. Don’t get me wrong, there’s some decent in- and out-traffic constantly trickling from this place, but overall, it really wasn’t that bad. The best part about being here? You’re in the middle of nowhere and so peace & quiet is going to easily be on hand as well as a very good dose of safety & security due to its remoteness located on the very edge north of town. Additionally, while the lot is massive, it is also very well taken care of, incredibly flat (hey, you’re in Illinois afterall, so that shouldn’t be too difficult to find!) and EZ to find an isolated spot away from all the busyness to enjoy some space from the otherwise crowded mess you were trying to escape from in the first place.

In the event that you decide to park at this oversized discount retailer parking haven, I would suggest parking as far on the western or northern perimeters as possible, where these locations will put you as far away from the Walmart retail entrance as possible and where the surrounding traffic isn’t too heavy to cause much of any noise. Of course, you’ll need to be mindful that as you are in a strip mall complex, there is traffic coming and going to other shops and restaurants. There’s great lighting at night along with an incredibly safe and secure vibe, because, well, again, you’re clear out in the middle of nowhere. So enjoy it!

While scoring criteria may vary from one person to the next, here are the 5 most important criteria that informed my rating of this overnight location: convenience (EZ on- and off-access), safety & security, quality (of facilities), peace & quiet and amenities (either on-site or nearby). Here’s how I ranked this particular overnight spot:

Convenience: 3

Safety & Security: 5

Quality: 4

Peace & Quiet: 5

Amenities: 4

Overall, I scored this location a 4.
