Starved Rock State Park Campground and Illini State Park offer established camping with both tent and RV sites, while several private operations like Pleasant Creek Campground and Kishauwau Cabins provide additional options. The area features diverse accommodation types including traditional tent camping, RV sites with hookups, cabin rentals, and even yurt accommodations at Pleasant Creek. Most campgrounds in this region are positioned near natural attractions like the Illinois River, Buffalo Rock State Park, and the hiking trails of Starved Rock.

Camping availability spans from April through October at many locations, though several campgrounds like Starved Rock and Illini State Park remain open year-round. Access roads vary in quality, with some campgrounds featuring challenging terrain. One visitor noted, "To get up to the sites, it's a one way up and down road. Hopefully no one else is coming the opposite direction." Most established campgrounds offer water and electric hookups, though not all include sewer connections. Primitive tent sites typically cost $28-36 per night, while full hookup RV sites range from $40-50. A camper described it as "perfectly perched far away from traffic, noise and the routine drudgery of day-to-day life." Many campgrounds feature fishing opportunities, playgrounds, and easy access to nearby hiking at Starved Rock and Matthiessen State Parks. Site privacy can be limited at some locations, with several reviews mentioning closely spaced sites. Campground layouts vary significantly – some areas feature shaded forest settings while others offer more open, grassy sites. Cell reception is generally limited throughout the area, with most campgrounds noting spotty service, which some visitors consider a benefit for disconnecting from technology.

      Rolling Oaks Campground

Old-School Camping with a Whole Lot of Personality

Rolling Oaks is one of those wonderfully old-school Midwestern campgrounds that feels less like an RV resort and more like a little summer community that has been evolving for generations out here in the rich corn patches of central IL. Family-run since 1969, the sprawling, shady property sits along the Fox River with its very own lake and a decidedly RV-centric personality, where curb appeal is just as important (if not more) than the actual mobile confines people are living in. A substantial portion of the campground is occupied by long-term and seasonal residents, complete with patios, sheds and occasionally elaborate outdoor entertaining spaces, which gives Rolling Oaks an unusual neighborhood feel rather than the transient atmosphere of most CGs.

While my earlier review goes into considerably more detail, I thought I’d revisit this campground with a quick topline of HIGHS and LOWS along with a fresh batch of photos.

HIGHLIGHTS: (1) Water is the star here, with a swimming lake, pool and direct access to the Fox River making this particularly appealing if you bring kayaks, canoes or tubes; (2) Plenty of shade and a mixture of full-hookup, partial-hookup and pull-through RV sites plus tent camping accommodate just about every style of camper; (3) Playgrounds, volleyball, horseshoes and a game room give kids plenty to do without leaving the property; (4) Summer weekends have an almost throwback campground-community atmosphere with dancing, cart rides, farmers’ markets, spaghetti dinners, corn boils and pig roasts; and (5) Being only a few miles from the village of Sandwich makes supplies easy while putting you in prime position for the enormously popular Sandwich Fair (if you manage to time your stay here to coincide with this annual attraction).

LOWLIGHTS: (1) The large population of seasonal and long-term campers means portions of Rolling Oaks can feel more like a permanent RV neighborhood than a campground; (2) All that community activity means summer weekends aren't exactly designed for campers seeking solitude and P&Q; and (3) The CGs sprawling layout means the experience can vary considerably depending upon where you land with front sections feel busier and more transient, while areas farther back become increasingly more residential.

Insider’s Tip: For the best balance of scenery, shade and quiet, head toward the far side of the lake, away from the busiest weekend activity. And if you're thinking of bringing a kayak or canoe, definitely bring it as direct Fox River access is one of Rolling Oaks' biggest advantages.

      Happy Camping!

      Millpoint Park

      Riverfront Refuge

This lush, shade-rich, pet-friendly CG sits completely surrounded by the oft overlooked Spring Bay Fen Nature Reserve, creating the rare sensation of being deep in nature while still only a short drive from Peoria. A looping, shade-covered gravel lane guides you past roughly 80 generously spaced sites, each perched beneath tall hardwoods, before opening to the sought-after waterfront slots that frame spectacular sunset views across the water. Whether you’re casting a line, slipping a kayak off the boat ramp or simply leaning back in a camp chair during Golden Hour, this is a campground that practically forces you to exhale. As my review from a year and a half ago provided substantial detail, here I'm just going to point out the HIGHS and LOWS while adding some additional fotos of the CG.

HIGHLIGHTS: (1) Spacious, well-shaded sites that are far roomier than most RV parks in central IL; (2) Excellent mix of back-in and pull-thru sites with water, electric and sewer hookups; (3) Direct access to Upper Peoria Lake with a strong boat launch for anglers, paddlers and sunset chasers; (4) Two additional ponds on property for simple shoreline fishing - perfect for the kiddos; (5) Exceptionally clean restroom and bathhouse facility near the entrance; (6) Three rentable cabins for non-RV travelers; (7) Easy hiking options north and south of the property, including the small beach area at Funks Run; (8) Friendly ownership with a real character where the owner, Don, is known for going above and beyond for campers; (9) Reliable shade almost everywhere, keeping summer stays comfortable.

LOWLIGHTS: (1) The well water contains noticeable iron, which MIGHT be fine for showers but not recommended for drinking; (2) Mosquitos, gnats and ticks are summer regulars here in central IL, so be sure to bring DEET and scented candles; (3) Supplies are limited on-site, so trips into town are necessary for groceries or extras, but the good news is that in less than 20 minutes south of here, you'll discover a Home Depot, Lowe's, Bass Pro Shop, Target, Walmart and Costco; (4) Primitive tent areas - which can be found in the open lot north of the property right on the river - exist but provide little separation or privacy compared to the RV loops; (5) This CG can fill up quickly on warm-weather weekends and the summer holidays, especially the waterfront stretch.

      Happy Camping!

      Starved Rock Family Campground

Fantastic Family Campground Near Starved Rock!

We had a wonderful experience at Starved Rock Family Campground! This campground really goes above and beyond to make camping fun for the entire family. There were so many FREE activities for the kids, plus a pool, playgrounds, golf cart rentals, live music, family bingo, wagon rides, crafts, face painting and more.

The freeway traffic can be loud at night so ear plugs maybe helpful. Other than that, we had a great time and would absolutely stay again!

      Timberline Campground

      Fairly easy to get to

Older campground. Some of the sites have to share hydrants for water. All utilities are at the rear of sites. Some campers may need longer hoses or cords

      Nature’s Way RV Park

Quiet spot that was perfect for a getaway

Took my daughter for the weekend. Camp host were wonderful and even worked with us when I arrived later then planned. Full hookup was perfect and location was great.

Location is close to Utica so we were able to enjoy the local shops and restaurants.

Wonderful spot and we will definitely be back.

      Shabbona Lake State Recreation Area

The Family-Friendly Heart of Shabbona Lake

Canvasback Cove quickly felt like the liveliest corner of Shabbona Lake State Park, and it's EZ to see why so many families gravitate here. While one of three campgrounds within the park, Canvasback Cove sits closest to the playground, camp store, boat launch, fishing pond and lakeshore, making it wonderfully convenient for families with younger children who love having something to explore just a short walk from their campsite. The campsites offer electric and water hookups, picnic tables and fire rings, while the surrounding prairie, woodlands and sparkling lake create a peaceful backdrop that somehow balances activity with nature. One of my favorite memories was watching children race from the playground to the fishing pond with fishing poles nearly as tall as they were before proudly returning to camp to tell everyone about 'the one that almost got away.' Some campgrounds are designed around campsites; this one feels designed around childhood. From what we saw, lakefront Sites 117 and 125 are especially desirable thanks to their beautiful water views, while families wanting to stay close to the playground, camp store and boat launch will appreciate the heart of Canvasback Cove. We would absolutely recommend this campground for families because of its kid-friendly layout, outstanding park amenities and the countless opportunities to spend the day outdoors together.

Starved Rock Campground — Starved Rock State Park

Well kept grounds and beautiful state park

We had an easy after-hours first come first serve check in experience. Directions were easy to follow and the campground itself was well-kept. Having a power hook-up for a night was a huge plus.

The state park trails aren't really accessible from the campground but are a short drive away. They are doing A LOT of work on the trail system so not all trails are open at this time. Definitely check out some of the canyons and overlooks if you are staying in the campground.

Starved Rock Campground — Starved Rock State Park

Camp Beside Illinois' Most Beautiful Canyons

If your family enjoys spending more time on the trail than sitting around the campsite, Starved Rock Campground makes a wonderful home base for exploring one of Illinois' most beautiful state parks. Located just outside Starved Rock State Park, the campground offers spacious sites with electric hookups, picnic tables, fire rings, mature shade trees and just enough modern comforts, including shower facilities and flush restrooms, to make returning after a full day of hiking especially rewarding. One of my favorite memories was watching families head out early with hiking boots and backpacks, then return later that afternoon tired, a little muddy and smiling as they swapped stories about waterfalls, canyons and wildlife around their campfires. The best souvenirs here aren't the photos you take, but the adventures your family shares along the trail. From what we experienced, the more shaded campsites offer the nicest combination of privacy and a peaceful setting, especially during the warmer months. We would gladly recommend Starved Rock Campground for families because it provides comfortable camping, EZ access to one of the Midwest's premier hiking destinations and countless opportunities to spend meaningful time together outdoors. Just remember that you'll need to drive a few minutes into the state park itself to reach the main trailheads, lodge and canyon system.

    Guide to Streator

Camping options near Streator, Illinois offer varied terrain across a relatively flat landscape at elevations between 500-700 feet above sea level. Summer temperatures typically range from 70-90°F with occasional severe thunderstorms, making waterproof equipment essential. The region's campsites often feature extensive shading from mature oak and maple trees, providing natural cooling during hot Illinois summers.

    What to do

Kayaking on the Illinois River: Kayak Starved Rock Campground provides direct river access with outstanding views. "We brought our own canoe out on the water" according to one camper, while another adds that the campground sits "right on the water directly across from Starved Rock."

Wildlife viewing at Buffalo Rock: Visitors to Buffalo Rock State Park Campground can see actual buffalo. "Real live Buffalo are a treat for kids and animal lovers. A number of trails around effigy mounds make for a nice walk," notes one visitor. The park offers a quieter alternative to nearby busier parks.

I&M Canal Trail biking: Paved biking trails run along the historic Illinois and Michigan Canal corridor. "If you head further down there is a nice spot with a shelter and fire place... Walk to Ottawa is very magical," reports a camper. This trail system connects multiple parks and offers mile markers along the route.

    What campers like

River views: Many campgrounds offer prime Illinois River vantage points. At Illini State Park, sites numbered "003–018" provide "sweeping riverfront views of the Illinois River." The park features both Whitetail and Great Falls campgrounds, each with distinct characteristics.

Off-season serenity: Camping outside peak times provides exceptional value and quieter experiences. "Definitely a very relaxed and clean campground that isn't busy and has really cheap rates for off-season camping. $18 a night for walk-in and we got a 50amp spot right in front of the Illinois river," notes one visitor at Illini State Park.

Clean facilities: Starved Rock Family Campground receives praise for maintenance. "Shower house was cleaner and nicer than some and the addition of a port-a-potty closer to the sites was nice," mentions one camper, while another notes "bathrooms are well maintained and cleaned."

    What you should know

Site layout challenges: Campground designs vary considerably with some presenting navigation difficulties. At Glenwood RV Resort, "what we didn't like is the powdery gravel sites (muddy when wet) that were not very level, and the long road in is very rough." Still, they "did make it okay with our big 5th wheel."

Weather considerations: Low-lying areas flood regularly after rainfall. One visitor to Buffalo Rock State Park noted, "No restrooms but there is a water source you can filter. Saw lots of wildlife." Another camper shared that some sites require "a walk [from the parking area] but the sites are great."

Seasonal openings: Many campgrounds operate limited schedules. Pleasant Creek Campground operates from "April 15 to October," while several others maintain year-round availability. Some parks have seasonal staff shortages, with one visitor noting, "We arrived at 1045am even tho check in was 3pm and no 1 was at our site."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Pleasant Creek Campground offers designated play areas. "The kids loved going to the playground and they do have an arcade," according to one visitor, though they noted it's "really expensive" but has "bathrooms [that] are really nice."

Beach swimming options: Several locations offer water recreation beyond fishing. "After living primitive for a while, you may want to take it easy for a meal (or two) and if so, you're in luck, as the very nearby town of Utica has plenty of great options," reports a Pleasant Creek visitor.

Site selection for level ground: Choose carefully based on terrain. One family at Starved Rock Family Campground shared, "Unfortunately, our site wasn't level which made tent placement interesting. It wasn't bad enough to request a change, but if we'd stay there longer we'd definitely move."

    Tips from RVers

Hookup specifics: Lasalle/Peru KOA offers full RV services. "Sites are spaced very close together. You won't have any bit of privacy," notes one visitor. Another camper reported, "You can't go wrong with KOA. Great one night stopover. Sites very close together; no privacy, but no surprises, either."

Road navigation: Several campgrounds feature challenging access roads. At Pleasant Creek Campground, "To go along with that, we had pretty horrible neighbors during our stay. They had no sense of common decency. That's not necessarily the campgrounds fault, but with the sides being so close, it does play a factor."

Dump station locations: Know where services are located before arrival. Starved Rock Family Campground has "a dump station on-site" while one visitor at Illini State Park mentions the "facilities on site are terrible. The showers on site TRICKLED, not even enough to wash your hair. The sinks constantly run, they don't shut off."
