"Just outside of Chicago, we have been staying here for quick weekend trips and absolutely love the proximity to home. Clean facilities: Shabbona Lake State Recreation Area maintains well-kept amenities. "Bath/showers are very clean with hot water. Nicely kept grounds with a beautiful lake for dock and boat fishing. You can rent boats and they have a nice camping store," says Meg K.
Seasonal events: Halloween camping is popular at several campgrounds near Batavia. "My family never misses the Halloween camping season at Millbrook. This is an activity packed weekend which is amazing. Good for kids of all ages including the adults," shares a visitor about Jellystone Park Millbrook.

Cost considerations: Camping fees vary widely based on residency status. "It's expensive, for what is there, if you are not a Kane County resident," Jeff G. mentions about Big Rock Campground. Many preserves offer substantial discounts to county residents.
Reservation policies: Several campgrounds operate on first-come, first-served systems. "Even though they don't take reservations, there is plenty of space and availability," notes Melissa C. about Big Rock Campground.
Water hookup challenges: Water access can be complicated at some sites. "Water hookup is far behind camping pad - bring extensions!" advises Amanda K., while another camper mentions: "I saw where some campers hooked about 150' of hose to spigots behind the loops to run to their campers."

Hookup availability: Electrical service is standard but water and sewer connections vary. "Each site has water and electric. Trees are around the outside with few on the inside sites. All the sites have paved pads," reports Art S. about Paul Wolff Campground.
Dump station quality: The condition of sanitation facilities matters for extended stays. "What's worse is the dump station I was forced to use. OMG what a disaster. It's a relic from decades ago. Uneven and puddles all over the dump area," cautions Jeff G. about one facility.
