Best Dispersed Camping near Sargent, GA

Dispersed camping opportunities exist near Sargent, Georgia primarily at Joe Kurz Wildlife Management Area (WMA) and Sky Mountain Dispersed camping in nearby Alabama. Joe Kurz WMA provides primitive camping with no developed facilities, catering to both tent and RV campers. The area functions primarily as hunting and fishing grounds, with camping available as a secondary use. Sky Mountain Dispersed, located across the state line in Alabama, offers free primitive sites on public forest land with minimal infrastructure.

Access to Joe Kurz WMA involves drive-in and walk-in options suitable for both tent campers and those with RVs, including larger rigs. Sky Mountain requires navigation via steep dirt roads that may challenge some vehicles. Neither location provides drinking water, electricity, toilets, or trash service. Fire pits are available at some sites, and fires are permitted when no bans are in effect. Visitors to Joe Kurz WMA should note the requirement for a valid Georgia hunting or fishing license to camp legally, as mentioned in reviews: "DNR comes through every week to check permits and talk. Really good guys down there but have your permit to be on property."

Both areas offer quiet, secluded camping experiences with varying levels of accessibility. Joe Kurz WMA features a pond "full of fish" according to campers, making it popular with anglers. The area has no cell coverage and accommodates both tent and car campers, with some visitors bringing travel trailers. Sky Mountain Dispersed provides a more remote forest experience, though reviews note: "It's private but there's a ton of houses in the area with people driving up and down the road." Another visitor described it as a "beautiful remote place to set up for the night" with "completely quiet" surroundings, "maybe 3 cars pulled past all day," and mentioned that "the pull offs for van camping are limited and extremely dispersed off the multiple dirt roads." Campers should be prepared for limited amenities and self-sufficient backcountry camping at both locations.

    Sky Mtwy Dispersed

Beautiful remote place to set up for the night

It took us a bit to get here. Google maps tries to send you a way that doesn’t exist. Stay on Campbell rd until you are in the park on a gravel / dirt road and then keep driving. For being a gravel dirt road it’s pretty well maintained. The pull offs for van camping are limited and extremely dispersed off the multiple dirt roads. Some going very deep in the Forrest. We found a great pull through one on the left across from the fire watch tower. Limited to no trash. Beautiful piney woods. Plenty of wood. Completely quiet. Maybe 3 cars pulled past all day. Some cell service. Plenty of trails to hike.

    Nice for a night

We got here an hour before sun down. It’s a nice ride up on a very steep at times dirt road. It’s private but there’s a ton of houses in the area with people driving up and down the road. Once the sun went down there was too many outside noises for us to feel comfortable so we packed up. Very strange noises. Very buggy as well

    Great spot but:

This spot is where the lookout tower office used to be. It burned years ago but the concrete pad is still here. Ultimately, Rangers may come by and ask you to move to prepared sites nearby. I think they are concerned about fires as always.
