Pelican Roost RV Park

Navy ship watchers find front-row seats at Pelican Roost RV Park, where concrete pads line the Intracoastal Waterway on Mayport Naval Station. Military ID is required for base access, limiting this campground to active duty, retired military, and government employees. The RV sites offer full hookups with level concrete pads, though shade is minimal across most spots.

Front-row sites provide direct views of naval vessels entering and leaving port, with campers able to request waterfront positioning for an additional fee. A separate tent camping area sits at one end of the park under tree cover, though it lacks designated sites, fire rings, or picnic tables. The facility maintains clean restrooms with hot water and free laundry facilities in an adjacent building.

A fenced dog park operates across the street from the main camping area, while beach access lies within walking distance on base property. "Being on a military base the beach is secluded and semi private," notes Rachel C.. The commissary and base exchange are located off-base several miles from the main gate.

Nearby camping alternatives include Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park and Huguenot Memorial Park. Reserve early, as this popular military recreation site fills quickly during peak seasons.

Many mentioned the clean, level sites with waterfront views and ship watching opportunities. Visitors often highlighted friendly staff, good amenities, and excellent pet facilities, though access requires military ID.

relaxing, calming, beautiful

The splendor of waking up to the rise of the sun, the breeze from the ocean, and the occasional view of a naval ship passing by is by itself, and a cup of joe, breathtaking. the rec room is large and clean, with many options for entertainment.... from card and board games to TV.  it is not open 24 hours a day. All the sites are clean, and the rules are not overbearing.

there are nice restaurants outside the gates and the location is close to a host of other places to see and things to do. There are plenty of food options on base as well.

we have stayed there several times and are planning a return trip again this year.

Nice Military CG

Really enjoyed our 10 day stay. Concrete pad was level making set up quick and easy. Great water pressure. Free washers and dryers. Beach is a short walk and is beautiful. Our dogs enjoyed the fenced dog park. Loved watching the ships come in and out. Everyone we met were so friendly. Would definitely stay again.

Labor Day 2021

Be advised that this park is on Mayport Naval Station, so you will need proper military ID to access the base.

We are tent campers, and stayed in the tent area Fri-Mon over Labor Day.

The tent area is just that, and area. No designated spots, no fire rings, and no picnic tables. There was one table in the middle of the area and one water spigot for all to use. The area is shaded nicely and there is usually a breeze blowing in. When the breeze stopped, it was quite warm, even at night.

The park is mainly long term rv’ers with huge campers. The rv spots have little to no shade.

The staff was friendly, and called us while we were driving down, to get our ETA.

The grounds were well kept, even though Saturday and Sunday mornings, they were mowing at 8am.

The only dumpster we saw was about 1/4 mile from the tent sites. There is a big dog park across the street from the the rv park, and a nice beach about 1/2 mile away.

There is a PX about 1/2 mile away, the main exchange and commissary are off base a few miles from the main gate.

The bathrooms were clean, and had plenty of hot water. The park also has a laundry room next to the bathrooms.

Overall a very nice park, and we will definitely go back. We will be more prepared next time, knowing there are no fire pits or picnic tables in the tent area. Can’t beat the price of $10/night for that view.

Beautiful!

This Naval base rec site is probably our favorite so far. Being On a military base the beach is secluded and semi private. We were there over Memorial Day weekend, and the beach was not crowded. The rv sites are right by the water with beach access being a short walk. I would highly recommend this campground and we will certainly be going back. This is a popular one, so it is hard to find a spot.

Like visiting family at the waterfront.

I'm a frequent visitor here. It seems I'm here every six months or so. When I walk in the office I'm greeted warmly by the staff and truly made to feel like I'm family.

The sites are clean and well maintained and you are either across the road from the intercoastal waterway where US Navy ships sail in and our or you are just a short distance back but still with a view of the big ships coming and going. I love this park.

Basic Nessecities

First , this is on a military base, so limited access. Next, this is more towards visitors and short term living arrangements. As military campgrounds go is was nice and surprisingly in an excellent area. Sometimes your on the backside of nowhere. Right across the road are two nice size pavilions and a dog park. Down the road , about ...a mile is beach access that was very nice. (I’m not an expert on beaches but the dogs were allowed and it wasn’t crowded. There a rock wall were several people were fishing) This is a well maintained, clean campground which in military style is dress right dress small sites. Good WiFi and the standard day room, laundry/shower house and office. There is a shaded tent area at one end and though I saw no one during my visit the road is also a physical training area so might get a little busy in the mornings.

The best Military campground

Make sure when you reserve ask to pay extra to get the front row. I did not know that you could do that when you reserve.

Watching the ships come in and out is neat.

Not far from campground on base is a private beach which Is amazing.

Note the commissary and bx are off base and closed on Mondays.

Saint Augustine is not far away and is a good day trip to go explore.
