Cliff-edge dispersed camping on BLM land west of camping near Cortez, Sand Canyon sits atop a mesa where the terrain shifts abruptly from flat agricultural fields to exposed canyon rim. The transition catches first-timers off guard. Multiple reviewers note that the road starts rough and rocky for the first half mile or so before leveling out, and that high clearance is strongly recommended. Wet conditions make the road significantly more risky, so timing matters here.
Sites line both directions along the mesa edge, each one facing open sightlines toward Sleeping Ute Mountain and Black Mountain. Campers report light traffic even on weeknights, with occasional cattle on the drive in. Cell service is available, and campfires are permitted. The nearby Canyons of the Ancients, Sand Canyon (Road 4725) accesses the same general area from a parallel forest road, giving campers flexibility on where to set up.
Road-accessible vehicles with standard clearance can find usable spots right at the turnoff before the terrain gets more demanding. Renae G. arrived in a Subaru Outback and noted "Tuesday night was so quiet I only saw one other car pass by me." Bats are active in the evenings. Sunsets face west over the mountains. Bring what you need, as there are no facilities on site.
