Routt National Forest manages this free dispersed site along Highway 40, roughly nine miles south of Steamboat Springs, where a dirt road runs parallel to the highway and opens into five or six pull-through spots in a row. The setup is straightforward. Campers park along the shoulder or just off it, with open sightlines across Pleasant Valley and toward the surrounding mountains, and birdwatchers have noted a notable variety of species in the area.
Road noise is a consistent theme in reviews. The camp sits close enough to Highway 40 that passing traffic is audible, though one reviewer noted the parallel dirt road puts enough distance between the sites and the pavement to keep things manageable. Terrain is uneven in places, which can make leveling a trailer or RV difficult. Cell service is available, campfires are permitted, and pets are welcome. Paul L. visited on a Labor Day evening and found the camp entirely empty, suggesting shoulder-season visits see lighter use.
Trash around fire pits and long-term trailers have been reported during busier summer periods, so conditions can vary depending on when and how recently the site has been used. This is a practical overnight stop rather than a destination camp, and it tends to work best for travelers who need a free, accessible place to land close to Steamboat. Campers wanting a more developed or less trafficked option might consider Steamboat Springs Overlook, located less than a mile to the southeast along the same corridor.
