Base Camp Trailhead

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Rocky and remote, Base Camp Trailhead is a free dispersed site in Routt National Forest, accessed by a rough but manageable road that one visitor described as rocky most of the way with a few off-camber spots. High clearance is not required, though towing anything larger than an overland trailer is not recommended, and RVs are limited to 20 feet. A creek runs below the site. Mosquitoes can be severe in summer, so pack accordingly.

The site sits at the start of the Basecamp Trail, which connects to the Wyoming Trail and leads to Fishhook Lake. Hikers, anglers, and equestrians all have trail access from here, and camping near Steamboat Springs covers the wider range of options in the area. Cell service is available. If the seclusion and trail access suit your plans, this spot earns a closer look.

Little ways back from US-40

I wouldn’t bring anything back here towing behind me except an overland trailer, personally. It’s rocky a good most of the way, but high clearance isn’t needed. A few off camber spots, but nothing horrible. I passed a Subaru Crosstrack coming in. Once you get back it is beautiful with great views. There is a creek below the spot with crystal clear water. You have to hike to Fishhook Lake from here on the Basecamp Trail (Wyoming Trail). It’s very secluded and quiet. Mosquitoes were very bad, be aware.
