Heavily Wooded Site

Heavily wooded site about 30-40 yards off Last Dollar Road. Unable to see the road and traffic from back site. This road has two camping locations. Very private. Quiet and not a lot of traffic. The reasons for not five stars are the ground is sloped and the fire pits are not very established. The area can accommodate several off road or 4x4 vehicles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Last Dollar Road dispersed camping located in Colorado?

Last Dollar Road dispersed camping is located in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. The Heavily Wooded Dispersed Site is situated about 30-40 yards off Last Dollar Road itself, set back in a wooded area that provides privacy from the main road. The area features multiple camping locations along the road, with this particular site being well-secluded in the forest. The road connects between Telluride and Ridgway, offering scenic mountain views while providing access to these remote camping opportunities.

Do I need a permit for dispersed camping on Last Dollar Road?

No permit is required for dispersed camping on Last Dollar Road. This area follows standard U.S. Forest Service dispersed camping regulations, which typically allow free camping for up to 14 days within a 30-day period. Always practice Leave No Trace principles while camping here. Since regulations can change, it's advisable to check with the local Forest Service office before your trip to confirm current dispersed camping rules.

What is the road condition like on Last Dollar Rd for camping access?

Last Dollar Road is a rustic forest road with variable conditions that may require high-clearance vehicles in some sections. The road experiences light traffic, making it relatively quiet for campers. To access the Heavily Wooded Dispersed Site, you'll need to drive about 30-40 yards off the main road. The ground at the campsite itself is somewhat sloped, which can make setting up tents or parking vehicles a bit challenging. Plan accordingly with leveling blocks or by carefully choosing your specific spot within the site.

What seasons is Last Dollar Road open for dispersed camping?

Last Dollar Road is typically open for dispersed camping during the late spring, summer, and early fall months. The high elevation of this area in the San Juan Mountains means it likely closes during winter months due to snow accumulation. Summer and early fall offer the most reliable access and comfortable camping conditions. Weather can change quickly in mountain environments, so even during open seasons, be prepared for potential cold nights and variable conditions. Check local forest service announcements before planning a trip outside the main summer season.
