Within San Isabel National Forest, Fourmile Travel Management Area provides dispersed camping options in a desert landscape marked by sandy terrain and distinctive rock formations. This US Forest Service area accommodates various camping styles, from drive-in sites to walk-in spots, with rangers maintaining regular patrols throughout the area.
The terrain contrasts with typical mountain forest camping, featuring open sandy ground dotted with rock outcroppings that create natural windbreaks and privacy between sites. Russ R. describes the area as having "desert and sandy, great rock formations, trails for hiking mountain bike, atv, etc." Multiple trail systems branch out from the camping area, supporting hiking, mountain biking, and ATV use across the varied landscape.
Sites accommodate large RVs and multiple vehicles, with established fire rings marking the most popular spots. Cell service reaches most areas, and the proximity to rock climbing destinations like Transmitter Tower draws outdoor enthusiasts seeking multi-day base camps. Campers can access camping near Buena Vista for additional options in the Arkansas River valley.
The area works well for groups wanting space to spread out, RV travelers needing level ground, and recreationists planning extended stays to explore the diverse trail network and climbing areas.
