Free dispersed camping along Fossett Gulch Road in San Juan National Forest runs the length of a maintained dirt road, with sites ranging from quick pull-offs near the gate to more open, established spots a mile or two in. The road is in good shape and passable by a standard car, though it does narrow in sections. Optional 4x4 side roads branch off for those who want to push further in.
Site character changes considerably depending on how far back you drive. The pull-offs closest to Highway 160 are flat and easy to reach, roughly 150 feet from the road, though some highway noise carries. Deeper into the forest, the road reaches a crossroads where a right turn leads to larger, more open dispersed sites. A handful of walk-in tent spots also exist along the route. Cell coverage is absent throughout. Julie K. notes that while "we could hear road traffic it didn't keep us awake," which gives a fair sense of what to expect near the entrance.
The area has no fee, no reservation system, and no developed facilities. Campfires are permitted, and pets are welcome. Winter access is possible but the gate near the entrance may be closed seasonally, limiting how far in you can reach. Snow on the road has been reported as early as late December.
Campers wanting a developed alternative nearby can look at Lower Piedra Campground or Lower Piedra San Juan National Forest, both within a few miles to the east.
