Dispersed sites along the Piedra River in San Juan National Forest, Lower Piedra River Camp has around eight spots spread along the riverbank, with some large enough to accommodate RVs and others requiring four-wheel drive to reach. Campfires, pets, and alcohol are all permitted. Note that at least one recent visitor reported a $28 fee, despite some listings showing the site as free. Campers interested in camping near Chimney Rock will find Lower Piedra Campground just 0.4 miles north if this site is full or the access road proves too rough. The river access and relatively uncrowded layout make it a practical overnight stop for those passing through the area.
