Well kept secret no longer…

We took FR504-1D to the top of the hill and it was really worth the effort. Wide open area with room for 4 to 6 camps. The access from 504-1C was a moderately steep with a tight squeeze halfway up. Outstanding views of Creede and the long valley towards Lake City. It rained each day but, only for a short time and watching the storms move across the peaks and valleys was definitely cool. Nights were in the low 40’s and daytime highs of 75-ish. The area around 504-1C became a village over the weekend but, other than the OHV’s it was nice and quiet. Would we go again? Probably not but the stay was a real treat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the regulations for dispersed camping around Creede?

Dispersed camping in the Creede area follows standard Forest Service regulations. Most dispersed areas around Creede, including Forest Road 504.1C, have a 14-day stay limit within a 30-day period. Pack out all trash and waste. Always check with the Rio Grande National Forest office for current fire restrictions, especially during summer months. No permits are typically required for dispersed camping, but always respect posted signage regarding restricted areas.
