Forest Road 316 Roadside Camp

Accessible via a gravel road with some washboard sections but no significant potholes, Forest Road 316 runs through San Juan National Forest and provides one of the more accommodating dispersed camping setups in the area. Campers towing large rigs have had good results here. One reviewer pulled a 30-foot toy hauler without issue. The road surface can get difficult in wet weather, so checking conditions before arriving in shoulder seasons makes sense.

Spots line both sides of the road as it climbs, ranging from open, unshaded pullouts to more sheltered positions under piñon pine and, higher up, aspen. As Dan B. noted, "towards the top the landscape changes from piñon pine to an aspen grove so you really get a few different options." That variety in terrain means campers can choose based on shade preference, rig size, or desire for some separation from neighbors. Free-range cattle are present in the area and have been heard making noise through the night, which is worth knowing before you commit to a site.

Road noise and passing traffic are part of the experience here. Generators have also been noted during busier summer weekends. Cell service from T-Mobile has been confirmed as reliable. Night skies tend to be dark, and the area is quiet once road traffic settles.

No facilities are on-site, so campers should arrive self-contained. There is no fee and no reservation system. Dogs are welcome. For those staging a trip into the broader region, camping near Mancos covers additional options across the area. Campers wanting free camping near San Juan National Forest will find this corridor has several alternatives close by, including Madden Peak Road Dispersed — San Juan NF to the north and Target Tree Campground a short distance to the southeast for campers who prefer a more developed setup.

Many campers appreciated the abundant, easily accessible spots accommodating all rig sizes along this forest road. Road noise and occasional cow sounds were noted concerns, though some found it peaceful.

Easy in and Out

Little washboards but not too bad. No pot holes. I tow a 30 foot toy hauler. Peaceful campsite.

Great spot

There are so many spots available, some shaded some not. A bunch of cows all around too. It’s also a very easy gravel road to drive on. We walked around & there were some rough spots way back but mostly all very easy to drive.

Decent for BLM

Dusty, dirt road but can be trouble in weather.

TMO service was good. Quiet. Dark.

Lots of spots

Stayed here for two nights. Tons of sites along the road, never too busy. Can definitely hear some road noise, but good place to set up for a night or two.

Peaceful

A really great area! Tons of spots as you go up, some more secluded than others so a lot of variety of privacy and sizes for any setup. Towards the top the landscape changes from piñon pine to an aspen grove so you really get a few different options to fit what you’re looking for. Will be coming back!

Very good dispersed camp

This road can accommodate all kinds of camping. We didn't have to drive very far to find a good spot. Where we camped could fit all size rigs.

Decent spot that did the trick

We got to town late and our preferred spots were all taken, so we came here as a backup. The spots are all right off of the road and easy to get to. The views aren’t much, but they’re good spots. There’s a bit of traffic on the road but nothing out of the ordinary.

Great Spot - Not Very Wild

Awesome spot, TONS of places to pitch a tent or park a camper.

That being said - lots of generators, moderate views, cars driving by often.

This was an easy spot and any kind of vehicle can get here. Lots of room, not much to look at in the fall,as far as, right around, but the views are amazing king distance and at night the stars are amazing. I didn’t hear any cows, it was quiet at night

Lots of parking, lots of cows

Lots of good parking spots along the road, all well established spots. Only con is there were a whole bunch of cows, making noise allllllll night long. If you can deal with that, then it’s a great spot!
