The sound of Cottonwood Creek dominates this dispersed camping area in San Isabel National Forest, where sites spread along both sides of the road beyond the main Cottonwood Lake Campground. Campers find a mix of walk-in spots and drive-in areas that can accommodate RVs and trailers, with flatter sites concentrated near the creek on the left side of the road.
Access requires navigating a washboard road that becomes increasingly rocky as it continues past the camping area. A 4WD warning sign marks where the route becomes impassable for standard vehicles. The right side offers steeper terrain less suitable for larger rigs, while creek-adjacent spots provide the soundtrack of flowing water that masks most campground noise. A porta-potty serves the area, unusual for dispersed camping.
Wildlife sightings include moose in the lake and deer moving through the surrounding trees at 9,600 feet elevation. Spencer B. notes "Wildlife was abundant during our stay" and recommends tick precautions. Brook trout populate the creek, and the marshy areas around the lake attract various species. Weekend crowds fill most available spots by Friday afternoon, making Wednesday or Thursday arrivals advisable for site selection.
Campers seeking developed amenities can check Cottonwood Lake Campground just up the road.
