Packed!

Beautiful area, great location with plenty to do, but docked a star because it was packed! We arrived before noon on a Friday morning. Cottonwood Lake Campground was already full, and there were almost no dispersed sites left - or so we thought. By Sat night, we saw that we just weren't very creative when it came to finding dispersed camping spots (or maybe we were too picky) - every nook and cranny that could fit a tent or vehicle was filled. We did find a great, secluded spot about 4 miles past the campground / ~2 miles past the sign that reads "very limited dispersed camping beyond this sign" (the sign was accurate). There were some great sites that offered enough seclusion along the creek in the busy dispersed area closer to the lake (all full when we arrived).

This area works well if you just need a place to park and sleep but intend to spend most of your time away from camp taking advantage of the plentiful recreation opportunities in the area. If you're going to spend a lot of time hanging out at camp, plan to arrive on Wed or Thurs morning latest to get a good spot. The lighter you're traveling, the easier it will be to find a spot.

360 degree views

This place is great! The road in is washboard, but take it easy and it is worth it. There are lots of spots on both sides of the road for RVs and tents. Pretty quiet other than the occasional motorcycle or ATV rolling by much too fast. The river is beautiful and cold.

First time dispersed

For our first time we were welcomed and helped in a variety of ways by others in the same travel trailer area of the dispersed camping.

Peaceful

It was a bit crowded, but you wouldn’t know it with everything so spread far apart and the running creek drowned out all sorts of noises. All you hear is the creek so much beauty.

Peaceful by the river

Lots of sites. Right side are steep and not class B friendly. Left side near the creek are flatter. Some need 4x4. Had a great night and a fire !

Great Variety of Sites Near Cottonwood Lake – Watch for Wildlife & Ticks

This dispersed camping area is just down the road from Cottonwood Lake and its main campground. There’s a solid mix of spots—some walk-in sites, large flat areas perfect for drive-in camping, and even a big open space that can easily accommodate RVs or trailers. There’s also a porta-potty on-site, which is a nice bonus for a dispersed setup.

As you continue down the road, it does get narrow and very rocky. There’s a posted sign noting that 4WD is required beyond a certain point, and it's best to respect that—2WD vehicles could easily cause damage or get stuck.

Wildlife was abundant during our stay! We spotted moose in the lake and deer darting through the trees nearby. One heads-up: we did find a few ticks at our site, so if you’re bringing pets or hiking through brush, take precautions.

Overall, a scenic and peaceful spot with lots to explore—just come prepared!

More than 5 stars!

We got a spot with amazing views just past Cottonwood Lake campground. It’s awesome here. There is a creek full of Brook Trout right across the street.
