CR 306 -Dispersed Site

Within San Isabel National Forest, CR 306 -Dispersed Site offers free camping along County Road 306 near the Avalanche Trailhead. This Forest Service-managed area features multiple dispersed sites scattered across several access points within a half-mile stretch, each positioned within 100 feet of the paved road but separated by wooded terrain.

The sites sit alongside a creek that provides both water access and ambient sound throughout the night. Most locations include established fire rings, though campers should verify current fire restrictions before arrival. Road conditions vary significantly between access points—some accommodate regular vehicles easily while others present challenges for two-wheel drive or larger rigs. Ronald B. notes the area was "really peaceful" during his three-night October stay, despite nighttime temperatures dropping into the 30s.

Sites tend to fill quickly, especially on weekends when nearby Collegiate Peaks reaches capacity. The proximity to County Road 306 means occasional vehicle noise, though traffic typically slows after dark. A restroom facility operates across the road at Avalanche Trailhead. Cell service and WiFi are available, making this a practical base for campers seeking campgrounds near Buena Vista who need connectivity alongside creek access.

This dispersed camping area works best for tent campers and smaller RVs comfortable navigating potentially rough access roads, with bear-safe food storage required in this forested mountain environment.

Free dispersed camping right off the highway with creek access and fire rings. Road noise and crowding are common concerns, though sites are easily accessible for most vehicles.

Some nice sites along the creek, easy to get to.

Multiple sites along the creek, some of the road through a wooded area looks dicey for a large vehicle. There are multiple access points to various sites right off of CR306, some look more accessible to regular vehicles. A couple of those access roads seem pretty challenging for a two wheel drive.

The site I camped at was just opposite the road to Avalanche Trailhead. It was a little bumpy but not challenging. All of the sites are within about 100 feet of CR306, separated by woods from the road, very quiet at night.

I camped out in a tent in early October and temps were down in the 30 s at night. Had to keep my heater going. Camped there three nights, really peaceful.

Handful of spots, nice location

Quite a few driveways that look like they’re leading to a residential area but there are very few homes especially a half mile from the Denny Creek trailhead. Right off the highway so a little noisy at night but calms down. The river runs right by spots, relaxing sound and plenty of water. Even surface and easy to set up.

Dispersed but with everyone else

We were trying to stay at Collegiate Peaks Campground but it filled up on a Friday afternoon so we back tracked to Avalanche TH and found some dispersed spots actoss the street. An easy to find camp right off the road with a few different entrances and a creek running alongside. Everyone else had the same idea so it can get pretty crowded and be prepared for some louder groups at night. You’ll be passed by cars on the road at any time but the speed limit is low so it’s not too bothersome. There’s a bathroom across the street at Avalanche TH if needed. Theres plenty of fire fings there but keep in mind the fire regulations! Dont forget to clean up after yourself and bring bear containers!

Great spot in a pinch

I'm basing my review mainly off of the other free dispersed sites in the area.  It isn't that this place is bad, but this wouldn't make my top 10 of dispersed sites in the area.  I would absolutely stay here again, but it would be a last resort.  Also I counted about 4 different turnoffs from the highway stretched across a half mile so check them all for sites because they weren't all joined.

Pros

  • Free
  • The spots are easily accessible from the paved highway.  That being said it's pretty tight and steep in spots, I wouldn't dare try pulling thing of size into these sites.
  • Stream accessible.  I stayed right on the stream and hung out next to it for a few hours the night I was there.
  • Fire rings at most sites that I saw.

Cons

  • Not much privacy between sites.
  • Since it's right off the highway there can be some noise issues.
  • For a place tucked away in the Collegiate Peaks it's sad that the views aren't better.
  • Sites weren't very level.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is dispersed camping allowed on Cottonwood Pass near Buena Vista?

Dispersed camping is available on CR 306 near Cottonwood Pass, with several turnoffs providing camping opportunities. Look for sites across from Avalanche Trailhead and near Denny Creek trailhead. The area features multiple driveways and entrances that lead to camping spots rather than residential areas, particularly within a half-mile of the Denny Creek trailhead. These sites are positioned alongside a creek or river, offering both water access and pleasant natural sounds. The location provides a convenient base for exploring the Collegiate Peaks wilderness area.

What is the best time of year for dispersed camping near Buena Vista, Colorado?

The best time for dispersed camping near Buena Vista is late spring through early fall (May-September), when mountain passes are typically clear of snow and temperatures are comfortable. Summer offers ideal conditions but brings more visitors, especially on weekends. Early fall provides beautiful foliage with fewer crowds. Weather can change quickly at higher elevations, so always check conditions before heading out. Water is readily available from the creek that runs alongside many of the camping spots, which is particularly beneficial during the warmer months.

Is there free dispersed camping available near Buena Vista, CO?

Yes, free dispersed camping is available near Buena Vista at CR 306. These no-fee sites provide an economical alternative when established campgrounds like Collegiate Peaks fill up. Multiple access points exist along the road, including areas across from Avalanche Trailhead and near Denny Creek trailhead. The sites feature creek access and mountain views. While not as secluded as some other dispersed camping areas (you'll hear some highway noise), the combination of accessibility, water proximity, and zero cost makes these spots popular alternatives for budget-conscious travelers exploring the Buena Vista region.

Do I need a 4WD vehicle to access dispersed camping sites on County Road 306?

4WD is not strictly necessary to access the dispersed camping sites on CR 306, as they're located right off the main road with multiple entrance points that are generally accessible. The sites near Avalanche Trailhead and within a half-mile of Denny Creek trailhead can be reached with standard vehicles during good weather conditions. However, having higher clearance might be beneficial for some of the turnoffs, especially after rain or early/late in the season. The proximity to the highway makes these sites some of the more accessible dispersed camping options in the area.

What are the rules for dispersed camping in the Collegiate Peaks area near Cottonwood Pass?

When dispersed camping in the Collegiate Peaks area, follow standard San Isabel National Forest regulations: camp at least 100 feet from water sources, trails, and roads; practice Leave No Trace principles; and use existing fire rings when having campfires (check for fire restrictions during dry periods). Stays are typically limited to 14 days within a 30-day period. Pack out all trash and properly dispose of human waste. Camping is not permitted in developed recreation areas or within one mile of campgrounds. The area near Denny Creek trailhead provides established dispersed sites that minimize environmental impact.
