Quiet mornings at West Lake campground bring the sounds of anglers working the shoreline, a reliable signal that this small US Forest Service campground in camping spots around Red Feather Lakes draws a consistent crowd of fishing-focused visitors. Set within Roosevelt National Forest, the campground sits directly at the edge of West Lake, and most sites look out over the water. Sites are large and shaded, spaced out enough that neighbors rarely feel close. Note that swimming is not permitted in the lake.

The camp hosts here have a strong reputation. Multiple reviewers mention clean vault toilets and well-maintained sites, with hosts observed actively cleaning between guests. Eight sites are first-come, first-served; the remainder require reservations, which fill quickly. Sabrina S. notes it's "hard to get a spot here unless you reserve a spot 6 months ahead." Sites 16 and 17, nearest the entrance, are smaller than most. A trail runs along the lake's edge, and a nearby store carries a solid selection of supplies. Campers exploring campgrounds around Roosevelt National Forest will find additional options in the area, including Arapaho-Roosevelt/Dowdy Lake roughly half a mile north.

Electric hookups and flat parking make the campground workable for RVs up to 40 feet. Cell service is available. The access road has drawn some rough-road comments, so check conditions before arriving, especially early in the season. The campground runs from late May through late September, and given how competitive reservations are, booking as early as the system allows is strongly advisable.

Many campers appreciated the well-maintained sites, excellent hosts, and peaceful setting with good privacy. Minor road noise noted but generally considered acceptable by most visitors.

This is a gem

West Lake is one of three campgrounds located near Red Feather Lakes in Northern Colorado. The campground sits at the edge of a small lake that attracts fishermen and personal water sports like kayaks and paddleboards. The sites are large and most have shade. Eight sites are First Come, while the others are reservation. There are three vault toilets, garbage collection, picnic tables, and fire rings. There is also a host at this campground. Most all of the sites have a view of West Lake. A trail runs along the edge of the lake and at the far end of the lake there is a supermarket where you can purchase a good selection of supplies. Close by are three restaurants with various days of service. My visit was 5/17/2026. Yes it did snow. Site 16 & 17 are the closest to the entrance and smaller than most of the other sites.

We drove through

We actually drove up the drive by accident & found we were in the campground. The sites looked very nice. A long row of them with a nice view of the lake. These are the sites to get.

This is Forest Service, so don't expect things like showers. There's a path around the lake & it's used by people fishing too.

Although it didn't seem as busy as Dowdy Lake, it's busier than Lake Bellaire, which I loved.

We visited West Lake Campground, no overnight stay.

Beautiful lake

Not one bad campsite. Few first come first serve. Most sites require reservations until Sept. Very clean and well maintained. Camp hosts are wonderful.

Peaceful oasis

We stayed for two nights. We love that this campground is quiet, spaced out and fairly small. It’s perfect for our young family.

Spaced Out and Water is nice

Great campsite with plenty of space from neighbors. The camp host do an immaculate job maintaining, I watched them cleaning a site next to ours and they really care for the campground. Bathrooms are clean. The water is nice, a bit crowded with fishers and there’s a No Swimming policy. Electric hook up and flat parking for campers. It close to the road so you can hear traffic but it’s not too loud

Saw snakes, blue birds, chipmunks, cranes.

Easy access, beautiful lake

West Lake campground is a beautiful spot off 74. The lake is great for fishing, and the tent campsites are super private. Your pass includes access to other lakes in the surrounding area as well.

We didn’t see any moose but we could definitely hear them early in the morning.

Clean bathrooms and great, friendly hosts!
