So good.

Like with all good camping spots, ya gotta get there early. The good news is that even on a busy weekend, there's bound to be a spot SOMEWHERE off Deadman Road, even if it's not the best of the best, bc there are so many options. They all offer a form of privacy, but the variety of what's available here is what makes it so special... Boulders/rocks? check. Views? check. Trees? check. Water/stream? check. We've been up there 4 times, and each time offered something different than the last.

It's conveniently located near Red Feather, so if you need to fill up some water or grab a few things from the store, it's not too far of a drive.

Visiting Dowdy Lake was the highlight... We were lucky enough to find our own "private" beach where we got to swim and cool off during the most beautiful sunny day, and then head back to our campsite to enjoy the Milky Way Movie next to our campfire.

Heaven, and worth the drive.

Amazing Stars

Campground is about an hour from Fort Collins. We got there late on a Friday night and there were plenty of spots open. The site was exposed so we set up behind the trees on the right side. Gave some protection from wind but not much. Sunset was amazing, but the real show happened when the stars came out. I think it was the most stars I've ever seen. I definitely would camp here again for a quick weekend getaway.

Beautiful, Out of the way

I loved this site, but it is very far out of the way if you are planning to go to RMNP or Estes Park. We went up a very washed out hill to get to our spot (in a Subaru Outback), which we realized later that there were much more accessible spots farther down the road up an easier hill.

We saw one RV in a large site on the main road, but the better spots are up the hill where an RV wouldn’t be able to reach. Definitely search for a good site, because there are lots if you explore the different roads.

We visited in May and only saw the one other RV. The site we stayed at had a fire pit made of stones, but none of the other sites we saw had any designated fire pits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Deadman Road dispersed camping located in Red Feather Lakes, Colorado?

Deadman Road dispersed camping is located approximately one hour north of Fort Collins in the Red Feather Lakes area of Colorado. The road branches off into numerous camping options throughout the area, offering various levels of privacy and scenic views. The area is relatively remote, making it quite distant from Rocky Mountain National Park and Estes Park. For visitors planning to explore those attractions, be aware that the camping area requires significant additional travel time.

What are the rules and regulations for dispersed camping on Deadman Road?

Deadman Road follows standard dispersed camping regulations, with stays limited to 14 days. Campers must practice Leave No Trace principles, pack out all trash, and maintain at least 100 feet distance from water sources. Campfires are permitted in established fire rings when no fire restrictions are in place. Each site must be at least 150 feet from the main road. There are no designated bathrooms, so campers need to properly dispose of human waste. While there's no fee to camp, the area can get busy on weekends, so arriving early is recommended to secure a spot.

What type of vehicles can access the dispersed camping areas on Deadman Road?

The road conditions on Deadman Road vary significantly, with some areas being more challenging than others. While passenger cars can access some sites, a vehicle with higher clearance like a Subaru Outback is better suited for navigating the terrain. Some portions of the road feature washed-out hills that require careful driving. For easier access, look for sites farther down the road that don't require climbing steep hills. Many campers find more accessible spots by exploring the various offshoots from the main road.

Is Deadman Road open year-round for dispersed camping?

Deadman Road is typically not accessible year-round due to seasonal weather conditions. Winter snow typically closes the road, particularly at higher elevations. The best camping seasons are late spring through early fall when the road is fully passable. Weather conditions can change rapidly in this area, so checking current road status before heading out is advisable, especially during shoulder seasons. Contact the local ranger district for the most up-to-date information on closures or restrictions before planning your trip.
