Roosevelt National Forest manages Deadman Road as dispersed camping, meaning no designated sites, no hookups, and no fee. The corridor runs through forested terrain northwest of Red Feather Lakes, putting the small town within reasonable driving distance for water resupply or a store run. Campers who arrive early on busy weekends have the most options, though reviewers note that even when the road sees traffic, the sheer number of pullouts and side roads means spots remain available.
Site conditions vary considerably depending on where along the road you end up. Some pullouts sit in the open with wide sightlines toward surrounding terrain, while others tuck behind tree cover and offer more wind protection. One reviewer found their exposed site required setting up behind trees to block the wind. A few spots include stone fire rings built by previous campers, but most do not, so arriving with your own fire-building plan makes sense. Dowdy Lake and several other lakes are within reach for day trips, adding a water recreation dimension to what is otherwise a forest camping experience.
Road access deserves attention before you go. At least one reviewer navigated a washed-out hill in a Subaru Outback before discovering more accessible routes farther down. RVs can find space along the main road, though the hillside spots are out of reach for larger rigs. Jade M. notes that "the real show happened when the stars came out," a detail consistent with the area's open sightlines and limited light pollution. Description
Free camping (dispersed) is allowed on most national forest lands except in highly developed areas - such as trailheads, campgrounds and picnic sites - and in some of our most visited places. Be sure to check for regulations in advance and look for signs in the area to indicate if camping is allowed.
Some areas allow camping in designated sites only.
Know Before You Go
Check the weather and road closures before heading up. Follow Leave No Trace principles. There are no facilities or trash receptacles. Pack out what you pack in. Make sure camping is allowed. Many lands within the national forest boundary are private or otherwise owned. Check that you’re on National Forest lands: maps. Don't stay too long.
