Free camping in Rio Grande National Forest, Stunner sits along a river corridor in Del Norte, Colorado, running from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Five sites spread with enough space between them to feel uncrowded even on busy weekends, and reviewers note the pit toilets stay clean without a host on-site. Each site has a fire ring with grate and a large table. Campers who pick sites set back in the trees report significant bug pressure; open sites fare better. A trail runs near the river, and a hillside near the entrance gives open sightlines toward the river bottom below. RVs are limited to 22 feet. Pets are welcome, and those traveling with dogs can find pet-friendly camping near Rio Grande National Forest across the wider area. Mix Lake lies 2 miles southeast for campers wanting an alternative.
Description
Stunner campground sits at 9700-foot in elevation beside the Alamosa River, two miles below the top of Stunner Pass. There are 5 campsites with tables, fire pits, a vault-type toilet, and adequate parking.
There is no water supply, so plan to bring your own. Firewood is limited. Convenient trailer spaces available. The Alamosa River is nearby for fishing. Unfortunately, naturally acidic water severely limits fishing in the Alamosa River between Stunner Campground and Terrace Reservoir. Big game hunting is possible.
The ghost town of Stunner is just east of the campground. This was a mining town that failed, due to nonproducing mines and transportation problems. Parts of the town are private property, so pack out all your trash and observe posted no-trespassing signs.
