South Fork Campground

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

White River National Forest's South Fork Campground sits along the South Fork of the White River in northwestern Colorado, operated by the US Forest Service and open from May through November. Sites run first-come, first-served at $20 per night, paid in cash on-site. Most sites are shady and private, with a handful of more exposed spots that sit directly on the river. A camp host has been on-site in recent seasons, and vault toilets are maintained nearby.

Two trailheads start at the back of the campground. The South Fork Trail (#1827) follows the river for 16 miles into the Flat Tops Wilderness, while the Spring Cave Trail (#1834) leads to a bat cave that requires a permit and decontamination compliance before entry; "check the forest service website for full details," notes Campground Recon C.. Spring Cave is open mid-April through mid-August only. The trail to Cliff Lake is also accessible from the campground and gains elevation over a few miles, though it can be overgrown in late summer.

Cell service is unreliable here. No potable water is available on-site, so campers should bring their own supply. RVs up to 36 feet are accommodated. Nearby alternatives include Meadow Lake Campground and Meadow Ridge Campground, both a few miles south along the same corridor. Campers planning a longer trip in the region can browse camping destinations around White River National Forest for additional stops. Arrive early on summer weekends, as sites near the river fill quickly.

Quiet, Water, Views!

We really liked this campground. Most of the campsites are shady and private. We were the only campers when we were there so we took a more exposed spot with river access. The toilets were clean and the Larry, the camp host, was so friendly!

The campground is next to a trailhead. We stopped at the cave, but didn’t go in and then took the Cliff Lake Trail up a couple of miles. Beautiful views. The trail was a little overgrown so I was glad I had on pants.

Overall, a great place to camp!

Beautiful!

We came across South Fork Campground based on The Dyrt's recommendation. It was so beautiful! We were on Campsite #11. It came with a firepit, picnic table, and a front row view of a beautiful stream with gorgeous views of tall trees and mountains. There is a bathroom nearby with vault toilets. It was self-pay, cash only, $27. It was very secluded and peaceful. No WiFi service. This became our favorite campsite of our trip.

Hiking, Fly Fishing, and Camping

Campsites were a bit overgrown and 3 sites were closed due to downed trees.  The trailhead for the South Fork Trail #1827 and Spring Cave Trail #1834 are at the back of the campground.

Spring Cave is open from mid-April to mid-August and requires a permit from the forest service. In addition, decontamination rules must be followed to protect the bats. Check the forest service website for full details.

The South Fork Trail follows the South Fork of the White River for 16 miles. Nearly all of the South Fork Trail is in the Flat Tops Wilderness.

Great RV Park by the Rio Grande

We stayed at this RV Park a few days after an early snow storm hit the area. We needed electrical hookup and a spot by the river :). This campground exceeded our expectations. The spot was beautiful, clean and the managers were very friendly.
