Beautiful park with great hiking

Spent one night here. Beautiful park with great hiking trails and full hook ups. Up on the side of a mountain overlooking Colorado Springs. Went to sleep hearing taps and was woken up hearing reveille. Also was visited by several jets from the nearby army base. Spaces were very nice and level and were oncrete with a picnic table. My only two complaints was you had to pay an extra $10 to get into the park even though you paid &46 to camp there and the road up to the campground for about a mile and a half was pretty steep, probably 8 to 9% grade. Watch your brakes coming down.

Camping next to the city with full amenities

Cheyenne Mountain State Park is a newer park in the Colorado State Parks system. Their camping facilities provide full-hookups at most sites, with two loops for tent campers. We have camped here in a tent and also in a camper. This is one of our favorite spots. It is close to town (only 5 minutes to a Safeway), but the park has abundant hiking and biking trails that go from prairie grasslands to mountainous evergreens. Watch prarie dogs pop out of their holes and enjoy the butterflies while geocaching. Ride bikes through their several trails or relax at your large campsite. Their visitors center has great displays and a live snake! You can also purchase ice cream. Their camper services building has flush toilets, good showers, a laundry room, and sells everything you need for a good camping trip (s'more items, ice, ice cream, etc.). Rangers and volunteers are helpful. This campground sits on the side of the mountain and has beautiful views of the city at night. It also sits near Fort Carson and you can hear when it's time to wake up or eat dinner. One of their newest items is their disk golf course, located next to the campground. It is fun and somewhat challenging. The only real problem here is the wind. It can get quite windy in the fall or spring. Since it is close to town, internet and phone service is excellent.

Camping with the City Light

I was skeptical of the closeness of the city but it turn out to be a very nice campground. Gobbler Grove sits on a flat area adjacent to Cheyenne Mountain with about 6 or 7 campground sites. All but one look at the city of Colorado Springs. I also located right below the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) a military installation dated from the Cold War which mission was to warn the Army of any ballistic missile or air attacks against North America and also very close to Peterson Air Force base. The proximity to these two areas makes this campground a bit noise since you can hear distant BOOMS and the military Reveille around 7 am. The closeness to the city makes this campground particularly interesting since there is a lot of areas to visit around. We recommend The Garden of the Gods, Old Colorado City, Manitou Springs, Pike’s Peak, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Cave of the Winds and Manitou Cliff Dwellings among many others. Cheyenne State Park also offers a many trials specially for mountain bikes and horses, bow target, and a camper service building with bathrooms, laundry machines and dryers, hot showers at $1 per four minutes and a vending machine. Overall the camp is nice and quiet. I don’t give it a 5 star due to the military noise which it was not bad, but it remind you how close were you from the air base and the NORAD.
