Deep in the forested hills of Castle Rock State Park, Waterman Gap Trail Camp requires hikers to trek in on foot to reach this backcountry site. The California Department of Parks and Recreation manages this minimal facility, which includes basic toilets and surprisingly offers water and sewer hookups despite its remote setting. A pay phone provides communication backup in an area where cell service proves unreliable.
Campers must bring $15 cash for the self-pay system, as rangers regularly patrol to check payments. Wildlife activity in the surrounding forest means following posted safety guidelines becomes essential. The camp serves as a launching point for exploring the extensive trail network throughout campsites near Castle Rock State Park, making it suitable for backpackers who want hookup conveniences without developed campground crowds.
