Black Mountain Backpacking Camp

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Sitting at roughly 2,800 feet in Monte Bello Open Space Preserve, Black Mountain Backpacking Camp gives hikers a low-commitment entry into overnight backpacking. The hike in covers 1.5 miles, though the trail network allows campers to extend mileage on either leg of the trip. Sites are few, and reservation holders sometimes don't show, leaving the camp lightly occupied. Bear boxes and a pit toilet are on-site. At $2 per night, it's one of the more accessible camping near Monte Bello Open Space Preserve options in the Santa Cruz Mountains foothills. Reserve permits in advance through the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District and review posted rules before arrival.

Great for beginner backpackers

This is such a little gem in the mountains! The hike in is only 1.5 miles, but there's plenty of trail options to tack on more mileage on either the hike in or out. The campground is small too, and not many people actually showed up to use their sites, so we had the place mostly to ourselves! The pit toilet and bear boxes on site take a lot of the stress out for beginner backpackers, and the view at sunset was gorgeous. Reserve permits ahead of time and make sure to follow the rules posted online.
