What waits at the end, though, is a free BLM site that consistently surprises first-time visitors with its level of upkeep. Fenced campsites, covered pavilions, fire pits, and pit toilets are all in place, a setup more structured than most dispersed camping areas on campsites near BLM Land — Central Coast Field Office.
"Clean and well kept" is how Carter B. describes it, and that sentiment runs through nearly every review. Sites sit in a slight depression, which means the surrounding views are not expansive, but the tradeoff is shade from trees overhead and covered picnic structures at each site. Campers who need sun for solar panels can position vehicles in open areas while still retreating to shade. Ground is level but hard, making stake-driving difficult. Wildlife sightings, including deer, quail, turkey, and coyote, have been reported by multiple visitors, and hikers should watch for rattlesnakes on trails during warmer months.
Cell coverage is inconsistent. Verizon users have reported losing signal partway up the access road, while others note decent reception at the campground itself. No water is available on site, so all drinking water must be packed in. As Lauren M. notes, "there is no water available," a detail worth repeating for trip planning purposes.
Crowd levels stay low even on summer weekends, with most visitors finding at least a few open sites. The campground works for two-wheel-drive vehicles in dry conditions, though sandy uphill sections demand careful driving. Several additional dispersed sites line the access road, providing fallback options. Nearby, Laguna Mountain Camp and Laguna Mountain Campground offer alternatives within a short distance. The site also serves as a free base for visiting Pinnacles National Park.
Upper Sweetwater suits self-sufficient campers who can handle a slow, rough approach road and don't mind hauling their own water in exchange for well-maintained facilities at no cost.

Directions
From Hollister take State Highway 25 south approximately 12.5 miles south of Pinnacles National Park. Turn east (left) onto Coalinga Road. Access points begin approximately 9 miles from the State Highway 25 and Coalinga Road junction. From Coalinga take Gale Avenue west which turns into Derrick Avenue. Turn west (left) on Los Gatos Creek Road. Los Gatos Road turns into Coalinga Road at the Fresno County line. Continue on Coalinga Road and look for the access points located on the both sides of the road, approximately 12 miles west of the county line.
