Big Basin Redwoods State Park includes Sunset Trail Camp, a hike-in campground that remains closed due to fire damage. California Department of Parks and Recreation manages this backcountry site, which required hiking access through open terrain before the closure. The rough access conditions made it suitable primarily for experienced backpackers willing to carry gear over uneven ground.
Alcohol was permitted at the site, and reservations were available when operational. Campers planning trips to the Santa Cruz Mountains region can explore campgrounds near Loma Mar while this location remains unavailable. The $15 nightly fee reflected its basic backcountry amenities and challenging access requirements.
