4WD needed!

Just wow! Amazing place! For sure you’ll need a 4 wheel drive to get up there. There is like 50 minutes of off road before getting to the camp sites. It’s around 10 degrees colder than the road since it is in altitude. Bring warm clothes ;) Peace

Off the Beaten Path with Beautiful Views

It is a ROCKY drive to get up to this sites and I recommend 4WD but once you're there, it is worth it. The views from some of the sites are gorgeous and there is very light traffic. There is water at one of the sites that is shared with all of them. No bathrooms but what do you expect from a yellow post site? Great fire pit, picnic table, and flat spot for our tent. Definitely recommend for anyone trying to get away from the mass amounts of people in California.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are the Yellow Post sites located in Santa Rosa?

The Santa Rosa Yellow Post Sites are situated at a high elevation in the Santa Rosa Mountains. They're located along the Santa Rosa Truck Trail, offering gorgeous panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The sites are positioned in a remote mountain area that sits approximately 10 degrees cooler than the lower elevations. This higher altitude location provides a peaceful camping experience with very light traffic, making it an excellent destination for those seeking solitude in nature.

What are Yellow Post sites and what facilities do they offer?

Yellow Post sites are primitive, dispersed camping spots marked by yellow posts. At Santa Rosa, these sites offer minimal facilities - there is a shared water source available at one of the sites, but no bathrooms or other amenities. These are true rustic camping locations designed for self-sufficient campers who appreciate a more natural experience. The trade-off for the lack of facilities is stunning views and peaceful surroundings with minimal crowds.

Do I need permits or reservations for Yellow Post sites in Santa Rosa?

Yellow Post sites in Santa Rosa typically operate on a first-come, first-served basis without formal reservations. However, you may need a camping permit or adventure pass depending on current forest regulations. Since permit requirements can change, it's advisable to check with the San Bernardino National Forest office before your trip to confirm any necessary permits. These remote sites don't have on-site staff, so securing any required documentation beforehand is essential.

How do I access the Santa Rosa Truck Trail to reach Yellow Post sites?

Accessing the Santa Rosa Yellow Post Sites requires navigating the Santa Rosa Truck Trail, which is an extremely rocky and challenging route. A 4-wheel drive vehicle is strongly recommended and considered essential by most visitors. The off-road journey takes approximately 50 minutes of difficult driving to reach the camping area. Be prepared for slow-going travel and potentially rough conditions. Pack appropriate gear for the higher elevation, including warm clothes, as temperatures can be significantly cooler than in the surrounding areas.
