Canpsites a plenty

There’s a few designated camp areas up this way. Went out in early Sept 2024 and the road was fine. I drive a lifted AWD overloaded Honda Element and I had no issue. There were two sections on the final ascent loop to the top of Thomas Mountain that were a little scratchy. You do not need to complete the final ascent to the top to enjoy the camping areas. Although if your car is capable there’s an excellent spot at the very end of the loop.

Oasis of calm

Labor Day weekend. We occupied the only spot out of five. Lots of wildlife. Raccoons in the night, gray squirrel, other squirrels, many birds. So much

Beautiful Blair valley

Beautiful, quite camp. Weather was great has bathroom house that was very clean and tidy. Entire camp was very clean. Had a visit from an extremely knowledgeable ranger who helped guide us back to the pictographs

Beautiful and Quiet…but the Bugs!

This site would’ve been perfect, and I mean perfect, but the flies were unbearable. I planned to stay two nights but I couldn’t make it past the next morning. If I stood still even for a second I was swarmed.

Oh yeah, bonus for these YP sites is, to get there, you’ve got a pretty fun, 30 minute 4X4 ride up the mountain. Bring a vehicle with clearance!

Busted up, but quiet.

Getting up Thomas Mountain is good fun. This Campground is about 8mi up the ridge along a sometimes washed out road. The site itself was peaceful and quiet, but entirely left to run away. Not a lot of level ground.

Need high clearance vehicle!!

I loved the site! It has a bathroom at the very start, but can be a little ways from the sites. I had service up there, not to crowded and the spots are a good ways away from each other! The only downfall is without a high clearance vehicle, it took me an hour and a half to go six miles up, and still scraped and almost got stuck. Definitelyyyy would say need a high clearance vehicle for some of the ruts, or be VERY experienced driving through rough roads.

Loved it! 4Wheel Drive and High Clearance

Awesome spot! Just got back this past weekend and the service road to get up was absolutely covered in mud and snow. Would 100% recommend it, but if it’s been snowing or raining, you’ll need high clearance and 4x4.And, be mindful that the drive is about 30-45 minutes up the mountain.

Also, to note, there are pit toilets and individual picnic tables/fire pits. And if you’re looking for things to do while up there, the Romona trail starts/ends directly behind the washhouse.

Good sites, far off main roads

This campsite is about 45 minutes down a 4 wheel drive only dirt path. Pot toilets and trash cans available at the site. Nothing else much around to do other than hang out at the campground or hike. High elevation means cold at night and I read other reviews that talked about there being bugs but when I went in February there were no bugs.

Shaded beneath the pines with a gorgeous view

Recommend four wheel drive to get to Tool Box Springs, the fire road is long but once you’re there it’s worth it. There is a restroom with trash cans outside, you can use these trash bins for carrying out trash if camping further down the road. Spring time and fall are the best here, less flies and insects. In the summer flies swarm, tons of beetles at night, think our dog brought home fleas from our site. Fire rings at some sites, as well as benches. This is a prescribed burn area, in early spring into summer months you will see a lot of charred areas and fallen trees.
