Known as Apple Canyon

Easy travel dirt roads. There are only 3 actual sites with fire rings, but there is plenty of room to camp without rings. 5g Verizon works great.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Thomas Mountain Campground located and how do I get there?

Thomas Mountain Campground is located in the San Bernardino National Forest near Idyllwild, California. The campground is accessible via Thomas Mountain Road, which is a dirt road that's relatively easy to travel. You don't need a specialized vehicle to reach the campground as the road conditions are generally good. The site offers a scenic mountain setting with tree coverage. For precise directions, it's recommended to check with the San Bernardino National Forest office before your trip, as they can provide the most current access information and road conditions.

What are the yellow post sites at Thomas Mountain Campground?

Thomas Mountain Campground features 3 designated yellow post sites, each equipped with fire rings. Yellow post sites are dispersed camping spots in the San Bernardino National Forest that typically offer more privacy than standard campgrounds. Beyond these official sites, Thomas Mountain provides plenty of additional space for dispersed camping without fire rings. Yellow post sites operate on a first-come, first-served basis and typically require a California Campfire Permit if you plan to have a campfire or use a stove.

How does Thomas Mountain Campground compare to other Idyllwild campgrounds?

Thomas Mountain Campground offers a more rustic, dispersed camping experience compared to many other Idyllwild-area campgrounds. While most established Idyllwild campgrounds provide developed facilities like restrooms and designated campsites, Thomas Mountain features just three official sites with fire rings plus open areas for dispersed camping. The campground's advantages include good Verizon 5G cell coverage, shade from trees, and easier accessibility via dirt roads than some other backcountry options. Thomas Mountain typically offers more solitude and flexibility than the more structured, often reservation-required campgrounds closer to Idyllwild town center.
