Accessible via Highway 111, Salton Sea SRA encompasses multiple campground areas spread along the eastern shore of California's largest lake. The state recreation area provides both developed sites with hookups and more basic camping options, with reservations available for most areas.
The New Camp section offers larger, well-spaced sites with some electrical hookups, though it lacks direct lake views. Sites here include ramadas, picnic tables, and fire pits, with vegetation providing some privacy between spots. Water pressure runs high at hookup sites. The nearby Mecca Beach area places campers closer to the water for sunrise and sunset viewing, though sites sit closer together with minimal privacy barriers.
Active railroad tracks run parallel to much of the campground area, with trains passing regularly day and night. "The campground is right off highway 111 and the railway so there is a lot of noise," notes Erin A.. Bath houses provide hot showers for $0.25 per two-minute session. The area serves as a base for exploring nearby Corvina Beach Campground — Salton Sea State Recreation Area and attractions like Salvation Mountain.
Summer months bring intense heat and significant insect activity, particularly flies and gnats. Winter camping proves more comfortable for extended stays.
