A fully paved Forest Service road running through Stanislaus National Forest, Hardin Flat Road gives drive-in campers a string of pull-off sites spread across a couple of miles, close enough to Highway 120 that Yosemite's west entrance is roughly ten minutes away. No bear boxes. No bathrooms. Just dispersed sites on national forest land, with fees that vary depending on when you visit.
The road tells two different stories depending on which end you camp on. Much of the western stretch passes through a burn area with minimal tree cover, while the eastern end remains forested and runs alongside Rush Creek, where a few sites sit close enough to the water to filter for drinking. Those creek-side spots come with trade-offs: reviewers consistently flag them as buggy during summer. Sites farther from the water tend to have better shade and fewer insects. "Couldn't even see your neighbor and the vicinity to the park made it perfect," notes Bobby J., though he also flagged audible traffic from the main road as a drawback.
Cell coverage is inconsistent. Verizon users report one to three bars in some spots, and others find no signal at all depending on where they set up. Forest Service vehicles pass through regularly, and some campers have noted late-night vehicle traffic pulling into sites with high beams. It does not feel remote in the way that deeper backcountry dispersed camping does. Groveland is the nearest resupply town, about 20 minutes out. A mountain bike and hiking trail sits roughly a quarter mile up the road, according to Kristi D.
Early April visits are possible but may involve icy conditions; a 4x4 helps. Mid-week visits during peak summer season still turned up available spots for at least one reviewer. Nearby, Hardin flat dispersed and Stanislaus NF Dispersed near Rush Creek give campers additional options along the same corridor if sites here are taken.
