Evergreen Rd Dispersed camping

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Stanislaus National Forest manages this free dispersed area along a dirt road near Aspen Valley Road, a short drive from the Big Oak Flat entrance to Yosemite. The spots are easy to miss. Despite the name, the campsites are not actually on Evergreen Road itself but on an unmarked spur that requires a careful eye to locate, especially after dark. Campers who arrive in daylight have a much easier time settling in.

Two defined spots sit at the end of the short access road, each with a fire pit and room for a standard setup. Dead and dry wood is plentiful in the surrounding area, making fires straightforward. The road also has pull-offs and overnight parking areas spread along its length, so van campers and those with flexible rigs tend to find workable spots even on busier weekends. The more private sites fill first, typically on summer Saturday evenings, while road-parallel spots remain available later into the night.

The area draws campers using it as a base for Yosemite visits, since the park entrance is roughly nine to ten minutes away by car. Maddie A. notes it is "so close to Yosemite," which makes it a practical staging point for day trips without the reservation pressure of in-park campgrounds. Those interested in dispersed camping near Stanislaus National Forest will find additional options spread across the forest. Dimond O Campground is roughly 0.2 miles northeast for campers who prefer a developed site. No pets are allowed here, and arriving before sunset makes finding a spot considerably less stressful.

Quiet and Convenient

Beautiful area and so close to Yosemite. A lot of different site options, however the cool ones do fill up fast. I got there around 10PM on a Saturday in June and was able to find a site parallel to the road, but there are bigger ones that are more private as well if you plan better than I did!

Great overnight camping

Great way to do Yosemite without reservations. Did an impromptu visit for 3 days and just van camped in this forest road. Works great if you can deal with driving in and out. Good camping spots here and there, tons of overnight parking areas.

Great little spot to boondock

Firstly, the spots aren’t actually on Evergreen; they’re on an easily missed dirt road near Aspen Valley Rd. There are two spots at the end of the very short road - each with a fire pit and ample space. There’s tons of dead/dry wood around for fires. It’s close to the road but there isn’t much traffic and it’s very close to the Yosemite entrance.

Get there before dark!!

We got in a lil late and was a little tricky finding a spot. But once we did, it was perfect. Took us about 9 min to get to the park entrance. Now that we know about this spot we will definitely use this area again. We'll just make sure we get there earlier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Evergreen Road dispersed camping located in Yosemite?

Evergreen Road dispersed camping is located about 10 minutes from one of Yosemite National Park's entrances. This convenient location offers a handful of camping spots situated on both sides of Evergreen Road. The proximity to the park makes it an excellent basecamp for exploring Yosemite while avoiding the more crowded and regulated camping areas inside the park boundaries.

What are the rules and regulations for dispersed camping on Evergreen Road?

While specific regulations aren't posted, standard dispersed camping rules likely apply: camp in previously used sites only, practice Leave No Trace principles, pack out all trash, and properly dispose of human waste. There are limited spots available, so arriving early is recommended to secure a site. As with most dispersed camping areas near national parks, stays are typically limited to 14 days. Always check with the local Forest Service office for current fire restrictions and any seasonal regulations.

What facilities or amenities are available at Evergreen Road dispersed camping sites?

Evergreen Road dispersed camping offers very minimal amenities, staying true to its dispersed camping nature. There are no developed facilities such as toilets, running water, picnic tables, or fire rings. Campers should come fully prepared with all necessary supplies including water, food, and waste disposal methods. The area simply provides spaces for setting up tents or parking vehicles in natural settings off the road.

What is the best time of year to go dispersed camping on Evergreen Road?

Late spring through early fall offers the best conditions for camping at Evergreen Road. Summer provides reliable access and comfortable temperatures, though this is also when competition for spots is highest. Arriving earlier in the day significantly improves your chances of finding an available spot, especially during peak season. The location's proximity to Yosemite makes it particularly popular during holiday weekends and throughout the summer tourism season.
