Hikers, bikers, and OHV riders have direct access to trails from this dispersed camping area near Lake Shastina, set in the high desert terrain north of Mount Shasta. The back side of Mount Shasta is visible from the site, giving campers open sightlines toward the mountain without needing to venture far from camp. Sites are sandy with considerable dust, something worth noting for anyone bringing gear that doesn't mix well with fine grit.
Road access requires some attention. A posted warning sign advises caution for low-clearance vehicles, though the dirt road can be managed in two-wheel drive. The best pull-offs appear early along the road, including a larger clearing near a pine tree. Campers who drive further in will find fewer usable spots. A railroad runs near the far end of the area, and trains have passed through at night.
Weeknight visits tend to go without seeing other campers, and the area has stayed clean according to multiple visitors. Cell service is available, campfires are permitted, and pets are welcome. Several other dispersed options sit nearby for those who want to compare before committing, including Andesite Road Dispersed — Shasta NF and Shasta NF Dispersed near US 97 — Yellow Butte Road. Grant M. sums it up as good "for view, seclusion, comfort." This spot works best for self-sufficient campers comfortable with sandy sites and variable road conditions.
