Beautiful views and amazing hiking

The views and hikes are incredible, but the camping is basically a place to sleep. No privacy and pretty busy. We ended up driving a bit further and sleeping in the parking lot at Panther Meadows (no amenities at all).

Beautiful Site, no water though.

The rain had run large ruts in the dirt on the way down, so cars without clearance may have a hard time driving in. But it was so beautiful and there were not many other campers. I will be staying there again. No running water though, as I thought there may be at the bathrooms on the road. Next to the road so there is noise, but it’s still great.

Beautiful and scenic!

Crowded, but lots of sites. Definitely popular with campers! Road was a little bumpy, but I was fine in my Crosstrek. Pit toilet by parking lot. Beautiful wilderness!

Good Spot to be before the Climb!

Lots of Dispersed tent spots but can fill up fast. Bathroom not too far away. Most people camping here are climbers, so they could be trying to get some sleep before the big climb. So it wasn’t great timing when we were Celebrating our Summit! Oops

Frequently Asked Questions

What facilities are available at Bunny Flat Trailhead?

Bunny Flat Trailhead offers minimal facilities. There are pit toilets located near the parking lot for visitor use. No running water is available at the site, so campers must bring all water needed for their stay. The area is undeveloped with no hookups, tables, fire rings, or other amenities typically found at established campgrounds. Parking is available but can become crowded during peak periods. Plan to be self-sufficient with all necessary supplies when visiting.

Can you camp at Bunny Flat Trailhead on Mt. Shasta?

Yes, camping is permitted at Bunny Flat Trailhead on Mt. Shasta. The area offers dispersed tent camping spots, though they can fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons. Many campers here are climbers preparing for summit attempts, so the atmosphere tends to be respectful of those needing rest. The sites are primitive with no formal designated spots, but there are suitable areas for setting up tents. Be prepared for potentially crowded conditions during popular climbing periods.

What is the best time of year to visit Bunny Flat Trailhead?

The best time to visit Bunny Flat Trailhead is during the summer and early fall months when snow has melted and access roads are clearest. Late spring through early autumn provides the most reliable conditions, though summer can be busier with climbers and hikers. Weather can change rapidly on Mt. Shasta year-round, so always check conditions before visiting. The shoulder seasons (late spring and early fall) might offer a good balance between accessibility and fewer crowds. Heavy rains can create rutted roads that may challenge vehicles with low clearance.

What hiking trails can you access from Bunny Flat on Mt. Shasta?

Bunny Flat Trailhead serves as a gateway to Mount Shasta's extensive trail system, offering access to beautiful wilderness areas with incredible views. While specific trail names aren't mentioned, the trailhead is a popular starting point for summit attempts on Mt. Shasta. Hikers can explore stunning alpine terrain with varying difficulty levels. The surrounding wilderness provides excellent opportunities for day hikes and longer backpacking trips. For safety, always check current trail conditions and bring appropriate gear for mountain hiking.
