Upper Sand Flat

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Shasta National Forest manages Upper Sand Flat as a dispersed pull-out along the road, with a cliff face to one side and open sightlines toward Mount Shasta at the front. A fire ring is on-site, though campers should check current burn restrictions before use. Nearby, red fir campground and Sand Flat Wild Camping offer alternatives if this spot feels too exposed. Cell service is available. Check conditions carefully before committing, as the limited pullout space and surrounding cliff terrain may not suit all setups.

Frequently Asked Questions

What amenities are available at Lewiston Lake Campground?

Lewiston Lake Campground offers basic amenities typical of primitive camping areas. While Upper Sand Flat is a different location, Lewiston Lake Campground generally provides pit toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings at each site. Most sites have limited shade coverage. The campground typically does not offer water hookups, electrical connections, or shower facilities, so campers should arrive prepared with all necessary supplies. For the most current amenities information, contact the managing agency before your trip.

How do I make reservations for Sand Flat Campground?

Upper Sand Flat operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservation system in place. To secure a spot, arrive early, especially during peak camping seasons and weekends. Have cash ready for the self-pay station if fees are required. If you're planning a trip during busy periods, consider having backup camping options identified. For the most current reservation policies, contact the local forest service or BLM office that manages this area before your trip.

What are the access roads like to Sand Flat Campground?

Access to Upper Sand Flat involves navigating unpaved dirt roads that may present challenges. The terrain features significant cliff areas in the immediate vicinity of the campground. An obvious dirt road leads into the forest across from the main area, which might provide better camping opportunities with less precarious terrain. High-clearance vehicles are recommended, especially during or after wet weather when road conditions can deteriorate. Four-wheel drive may be necessary in certain conditions. Check with the managing agency about current road status before your trip.
