Sand Flat Wild Camping

Sand Flat Wild Camping is located in the Mt. Shasta area of Northern California. It's situated on a Forest Service road with views of Mount Shasta visible through the trees. The campground is accessible via a somewhat rocky forest service road that can be challenging during certain conditions. This dispersed camping area offers a more primitive camping experience in a serene location that many consider sacred due to its proximity to the mountain.

Sand Flat Campground is a primitive wild camping area with no developed amenities. There are no restrooms, water sources, picnic tables, or designated fire rings. Campers need to be fully self-sufficient, bringing their own water, toilet supplies, and all camping gear. This is a pack-in, pack-out location where visitors must take all trash and waste with them when they leave. The undeveloped nature of the site means you'll need to prepare for a true backcountry camping experience.

The best time to visit Sand Flat Campground is during summer and early fall (late June through September) when the access road is likely to be clear of snow. Winter and spring conditions can make the area inaccessible, with the forest service road becoming completely snow-covered. Even without snow, the road can be very rocky and challenging to navigate. Summer offers the most reliable access and comfortable camping conditions, though always check current conditions before heading out.
