Shasta National Forest manages this free dispersed area along a dirt road southwest of Castle Lake Campground, where campers pull off into sites spread through dense fir and conifer forest. The turnoff is a consistent navigation challenge: GPS coordinates place the destination a bit early, and most visitors report needing to continue past the marked point until a dirt road appears on the right side of the pavement. It is easy to spot once you know to keep driving.
Three to five sites line the road, spaced far enough apart that neighboring campers are rarely audible. The sites vary in size, with the smaller ones near the entrance and more room further in, where at least one has a built-up fire ring. Bugs are a notable presence in summer months. Shade is available at many spots, and the surrounding forest keeps the area covered. Castle Lake Dispersed Camping sits nearby, and Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort is close enough that a swim stop is feasible on the way in or out.
The road handles small trailers and vans reasonably well, with a 25-foot RV limit, though at least one reviewer recommends four-wheel drive. A sedan has made it through, but the surface is rough enough to feel it. One reviewer notes that some sites are not clean, and there is reportedly an abandoned RV on the property. Cell service is listed as available. Campers who can work around the navigation quirk and the bugs will find free, low-key access to the Castle Lake area worth the trip.
