Grassy meadows or river side oasis, you choose!" states Candace R. about Woolum. "This is definitely the place to go to enjoy magnificent scenery and not be distracted by technology."
Wildlife viewing: The natural habitat supports diverse animal species. "Watch for Elk, you'll probably see an armadillo or two as well," advises Wendy M. about Erbie. "You can hike from camp to an old homestead then to the river and back. It's probably a couple of miles but a relatively flat hike."
What you should know
Access challenges: Steel Creek Campground requires careful driving. "The road is steep, has sharp, blind curves and is very narrow. But SOOO worth it!" advises Leah H. Four-wheel drive is recommended especially during wet weather.
Bathroom facilities: Most horse-friendly camping areas offer basic amenities only. "This is a very primitive campground, but it's one of our favorites!" says Shelly J. about Woolum. "There are two vault bathrooms, no tables provided, and not trash."
Seasonal closures: River access points may close unexpectedly. "I just tried to make a trip up there at the end of April (2022) and the final stretch of access road was blocked off due to erosion according to NPS," reports John W. about Woolum. "Not sure when main road will reopen."
Weather preparation: Temperature variations can be significant. "Late September visit means the river is low, nights are cool and days are filled with sunshine. Bring the bug spray and sunscreen," advises Candace R.

Beginner-friendly locations: Tyler Bend Campground provides more facilities than other sites. "Nice little campground. Please read description before coming or don't whine when you get here. No electricity, hot showers and water available close. Quiet and close to the river," says David G.
Site selection strategy: Choose locations based on proximity to activities. "Pretty basic campground, kind of just a bunch of spots in a field. About half are first come first serve," explains Lucy P. about Tyler Bend. "The river is gorgeous, I was sad it was too cold to swim!"
Noise considerations: Highway proximity affects some camping areas. "The close proximity to US 65 Highway detracts from what is otherwise a beautiful campground. Truckers seem to favor Jake brakes when descending into the river Valley…especially at 4:00 am," warns Marty about Tyler Bend.
