Nice Quiet area, beautiful sunrise

I got lucky and was the only one there! Not much water or birds in the area, but it was quiet. (Except for the trains)

Beautiful Views, But....

We stayed here from 9/18/2026 to 9/20/2026. The views of the birds on the pond, Dos Cabezas at sunset, and the sunset itself were all beautiful. Lots of pictures! Easy access, just a bit south of Willcox, we just drove around the loop towing our 25 ft camper, found a nice spot with views all around, parked, and set up shop. There were no other campers around. A few bird watchers rolled by us on the loop occasionally, but nothing that disturbed us. I10 was far enough away so that wasn't an issue either. The freight trains rolling through near I10 caught us off guard the first night, then after that they rolled through mostly at night while we slept and it didn't bother us. But what was an issue was the odor coming off the pond. It was a very strong mixture of sulfur and ammonia. The first night was brutal, but we got a little more used to it the next 2 nights. Also it was hot! Late September was not supposed to be that hot. We were out and about during the day. There's a lot to do in the area: Chiricahua's and hiking, down town, etc. But when we got back it kinda sucked as I had to run the generator to cool off the camper to get comfortable. So would I go back here? Yes, IF and ONLY IF I had a good handle on the weather. It has to be cooler. And I understand that at certain times of the year when bird migration occurs it could get crowed. So I'd take that into account when visiting here. So do your research before coming here and it will pay off. If you get it right it's well worth the stop.

Wilcox Lagoon or Cochise Lake.

Whatever it's called it is a very convenient place to spend the night. Just a very wide road around the lake. Find your favorite view and pull over . I stayed 2 nights while exploring the area. Freeway, trains and birds. None loud enough to bother me. Some traffic during the day. Quiet at night. Good cell service. Ill go back if in the area.

Sand Hill Crane Heaven

Great place to just pull over, enjoy bird watching & sleep peacefully listening to the birds! There are thousands of sand hill cranes here! What a beautiful sight!

There are no hookups or water at this location, the road is plenty wide enough to pull over & park for the night. Still room for two cars to pass at the same time.

Cons: it was very windy & dusty, but not a deal breaker for us.

It’s free and no one bothers me, it gets five stars

So great. Got there at roughly 6 o’clock, took a shower, made food, got to sleep. There are some trains off in the distance, but I use my earplugs. I’m a light sleeper, if you’re heavy sleeper, you’ll have no problem.

And once again, the app paid for itself by not having to have to stay and then motel with roaches, etc. It’s mid May and it felt like the temperatures dropped into the high 40s and hover there until about 6:30 AM. Once the sun takes over the mountain, the heat skyrocket and you’ll want to be getting packed up pretty quick.

Everything is super dry, so unless you’re confident with campfires, you might want to not do that there were some flyers, but no scorpions, no thanks. But I did see holes, so I’m sure snakes will be coming out when the weather gets warmer.

Great site, plenty or room and wildlife

Changed my itinerary at the last minute and found this free camping, had I know Wilcox was so cool I would have stayed longer. Super wide road circling the evap pond so room for any size rig with bird watching for days

Birders Paradise

Great spot for a night or two to listen and watch the sandhill cranes. Unfortunately some locals tagged my van with a paintball. Be cautious.

Bird Sanctuary

This location is near the I-10 and great for an overnight while passing thru. No amenities, and I wouldn’t suggest building fires or setting up long term camp. Gorgeous sunset/sunrise and huge variety of birds to view.
