West Hunt Road

The 1.5-mile washboard dirt road into West Hunt Road tests both vehicle and driver before revealing a large valley dotted with approximately 20 designated dispersed sites. This free camping area sits against the rocky slopes of the Dragoon Mountains in Coronado National Forest, where oak trees, yuccas, and tall grass frame the campsites.

Road conditions vary significantly with weather, creating deep ruts during rain events that challenge larger RVs and trailers. Willem V. managed the route with a 25-foot travel trailer, though several reviewers suggest smaller rigs fare better on the bumpy approach. The valley offers both shaded spots under oak canopies and open areas that work well for solar panel setups and satellite internet connections.

Sites spread across the valley floor provide level parking with mountain views. Rock formations nearby attract climbers, while the area's historical connection to Apache leader Cochise adds cultural significance to the landscape. Firewood proves scarce according to multiple visitors. Cell service varies by carrier, with some campers reporting reliable internet through cellular modems despite poor phone signals.

Campers must pack in all supplies and pack out all waste, as no facilities exist on-site. The dispersed camping setup works well for those comfortable with primitive conditions and the rough access road.

Many campers appreciated the spacious, level sites with stunning mountain views in this primitive valley setting. The 4-mile bumpy dirt road access was manageable even for a 25-foot trailer, though visitors should prepare for no facilities.

Cochise Stronghold Dispersed

Heavily wooded and sprawling campsites. Up against the rugged and scenic Dragoon Mountains. Dispersed camping so pack it in and pack it out.

Breathtaking views

This place was absolutely gorgeous. Reminds you of a cowboy and Indian setting. Apparently, Cochise is buried somewhere in the area, but nobody knows where. The road is dirt and kind of washboard. You probably wouldn't want to bring a large RV or trailer into this area. Some areas are tight, and some of the roads have big ruts from rain water flooding. If you can get back into this area, it's worth the drive.

SiteNone, my rig is too large. Class A

Beautiful!

We enjoyed our stay here! Close to boulders. Shady. Level. Sunny for solar panels to recharge. Open areas for Starlink. Oaks, yuccas, and tall grass surround the sites. Firewood is pretty scarce.

Sitenot marked.

Great national forest campsite

Large level valley with approx 20 designated spots. No facilities. Awesome rock views. 4 miles bumpy dirt road is worth. We did it with a 25 foot travel trailer

By Cochise Stronghold trailhead

Road in is bad but not horrible. Lots of sites and many open on Wednesday in late February. Great views and clean. 1.5 miles to campground and trailhead.

Nice...

Road going in is horrible, washboard the whole way... it's a beautiful little camping area, no bathrooms and no water... I have T-mobile. I didn't get a signal at all, but I have a T-mobile internet modem, and it got a good signal... Beautiful views of the mountains whare I was parked I watched people free climb up than back down, I don't recommend that it was extremely steep...
