About

National Forest

Kaibab National Forest

Overview

Dogtown Lake offers a scenic setting convenient to Grand Canyon National Park and the cities of Williams and Flagstaff, Arizona. The campground is situated in a pine forest along the shore of a small and scenic lake. Visitors come here to hike, fish, mountain bike and explore the area's cultural and natural history. It's also a great place to relax and enjoy the sound of the wind in the pines and the spectacular view of nearby Bill Williams Mountain.

Recreation

Campers are drawn to the area's hiking and fishing opportunities. The lake is stocked with trout, crappie and channel catfish. Visitors can enjoy a guided nature trail near the lake and a hiking trail that leads to a scenic overlook of the area from the top of nearby Davenport Hill. The calm waters are inviting for canoes, kayaks and electric motorboats. Single motors of one horsepower or less are permitted.

Facilities

The campground offers 50 individual campsites, four double sites and one group site that can host up to 80 people overnight. All sites are accessible. The sites are level with pull-through and back-in options for RVs. Restrooms, garbage bins and water faucets are available, however, there is no dump station at the facility.

Natural Features

Kaibab National Forest is nestled on the Colorado Plateau, an area of land that was uplifted by geologic processes. Dogtown Lake sits at an elevation of 7,050 feet. The lake got its name from the extensive prairie dog "towns" that once covered open areas near the lake. In spite of the name, this medium-sized body of water is surrounded by trees. Summer temperatures range from 50 degrees at night to 80-90 degrees during the day. Summer thunderstorms, known as the monsoon, can build up quickly, especially during July and August. Snow is common from December through March.

Nearby Attractions

Grand Canyon National Park's South Rim is just over one hour north of the campground. The cities of Williams and Flagstaff have amenities such as shops, restaurants and cultural and historic sites. From canyons to prairies, peaks to plateaus, Kaibab National Forest offers layers of opportunity for peace, solitude and discovery. Over 300 miles of trails, some clinging to the rims of the Grand Canyon, allow visitors to step off the beaten path into uncrowded landscapes.

Good Campground, Better Lake

Overall it’s a nice campground. Bathrooms are clean, trash cans available, spots include a table and fire ring and tent pad. Two down falls is how close some of the sites are too each other. It’s not the worst I’ve experienced but not one of the better ones. Also I understand the tent pad being different dirt. But the whole site had that gravel dusty dirt, which made for a mess, would have preferred if the rest of the site was the original dirt, would have been prettier and less messy. Depending how close you are to the lake, it’s not a far walk. Many sites you can see the lake. The lake as always is beautiful and not too crowded. We were there during the week but it’s still summer time when families are taking vacation. Drinking water is available and cellular service worked well.

Best Vault Toilet Ever!

Clean vault toilet. Like super clean. Shocking TBH.

Campsites are well maintained. The campground was fully booked, and although there were a lot of people it wasn't like the sites were on top of each other. Very relaxing. And, cows walking around. Saw deer in the area. Cute!

The Train: it's pretty loud. It goes all day and all night. I sleep through anything so it didn't bother me. My suggestion is to bring earplugs.

Doggie

A very clean, accommodating campsite. The rangers who maintain the area are incredibly kind and welcoming, and treated us so kindly even when we were buying wood at 8PM.

Firstly, the bathrooms were very clean and accessible, and I happened to see at least 3 of them around our campsite (the loop nearest to the lake). They have fresh spring water that is free to all campers available at these bathrooms. You can also dump your accumulated trash at a dumpster near the main ranger’s camp, rather than the bathrooms however.

On the way to Dogtown, there are cattle that sometimes occupy the road. You can’t smell them however. Your car may also become very dusty on the way here, due to primitive road conditions. There’s also a picnic area in the opposite direction from the campground when you arrive. The lake has two hiking trails, one being 1 mile long, and the other is 6. The lake itself is open to boats (more of the smaller variety) and is very clean. When fishing, we happened to get bites within 2 minutes of casting a pole (we fished at 10pm, no rain), so I’m assuming there is quite a lot of fish.

Sleeping in the campsite, there is not much noise at all except for a single train that may pass in the distance, but it’s not much at all. There’s a lot of stars and even a hint of the Milky Way in the sky. The weather is only slightly chilly (we went in August 1st) and was quite comfortable.

As for wildlife, although there are no bear boxes, we found that some wildlife (either squirrels, crows, or coyotes) came and stole our cornbread, at night mostly. There’s a lot of crows here in the morning and they caw to each other and hop around. So be aware of that I suppose. There’s also a lot of yellow flowers in the area that makes everything even nicer.

Great home base for Northern AZ

Dogtown lake, named for the prairie dogs who inhibit the area, is a great little spot tucked away in the forest not far from Williams, AZ on Route 66. This is also a great jumping off point for the Grand Canyon and Bearizona. Perfect little spot for tent camping. Some do get trailers in, but I wouldn’t attempt it. Fun fishing spot and spacious sites.

Free dispersed camping

This is a very nice spot in a section of forrest that was logged a few years ago. The dirt road in is good, a little washboard, but overall wide and solid. There are many spots to camp and fit anything from tents to 28-30 foot travel trailers/5th wheels and large diesel pushers. We came in late on a Saturday evening and had to settle for a roadside spot with no shade. Sunday afternoon however, the weekenders started pulling out and we were able to find a nice secluded spot in the trees further away from the road and other campers. This is a great jump-off spot to see the grand canyon or the sights in historic Williams az and route 66.

Wonderfully quite site, not that far off the Interstate

Though the roads to/from I-40 are fairly dusty, they aren't significantly difficult to drive and the distance from any thoroughfare makes this campground much quieter than Kaibab Lake, which is much closer to Williams AZ.  Our site was on the edge of the campground, as far from the lake itself as we could manage, and beyond the site's perimeter was undeveloped open pine woods.  Even though the CG was almost full that night, this was the quietest place we camped in four overnights in the Four Corners area and we plan to return.

Lovely lakeside location near Williams

This location is great as you are a short walk to the lake and within a 15 minute drive of Williams for supplies.  This also means you are very close to Bearizona, Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon if you want to take day trips.  Up the road is White Horse Lake, offering a small cafe and paddle board rentals. Site was clean and well maintained, even the toilets were very nice!  Great drinking water though trash can only be placed in the large dumpsters at the front entrance due to Covid-19.

Stayed in site 31, which was large enough for a family of 6 and 2 large tents.  Most of the sites are very rocky and it was hard to securely peg anything into the ground.  Overall, would not recommend this campsite for tents due to the hard ground.  This is a much better location for an RV or Camper, though it is a maintained fire road to access.

Also close enough to Williams to get a pretty strong internet/cell phone reception, if you require that while camping.  Was helpful for this particular trip!

Beautiful

This is our first time actually camping at a campsite, usually we just camp in the Kaibab forest down the road for free. The campgrounds are surrounded by trees next to the lake. Although camp is not right next to the lake you can see it from most campsites. Sites are decent size and not too close to each other compared to other campgrounds. The lake is beautiful with fishing and a boat ramp available. No showers but there are many clean bathrooms and drinking water available. In the town of Williams there are many things to do such as the Deer Farm and Bearizona that we have done many times. Definitely one of my new favorite places to camp!

National Forest Camping

So we didn’t actually stay at the campsite, we camped a few miles down the road from the campsite. We have done it multiple times and love it. You aren’t on a campground with multiple people and are only a few miles from bathrooms and the beautiful lake. Bathrooms aren’t overly nice, but better than nothing. Water is available at the lake. Decent fishing, plenty of crawdads to catch and eat during the summer months! They do have a boat ramp and we have brought our kayak before. Williams is a cute small town. One of our favorite places to camp!

Loud Camp

I really enjoyed the location of this campground but like other reviews have mentioned it is pretty noisy. For some reason this place just attracts campers which have a lot going on at their site and because of the proximity to each campsite sound travels.

I thought about possibly returning to this site midweek when less people are traveling.

I found a site which was pretty large and had a nice space for a tent. When I set up it was pretty empty but by dark that is when everyone started piling in.

I spent much of my time away from my campsite itself hiking around and enjoying the lake which has so much to offer.

Peaceful and clean

We missed the first turn off for this campsite, ended up on a road that was pretty beat up but a fun adventure for my Jeep and teardrop trailer. That area we drove through was full of very angery bees so be careful. Once we pulled in the nice hosts found us a spot perfect for our night of camping. It was a packed house that Sat night and one large group playing music a little too loud for our taste but at 10pm everything went quiet. Woke up to barley anyone else but us an two larger trailers. We loved the peace and quiet so much we decided to stay another night. Lake was beautiful, campground clean, bathrooms are well maintained and the water source worked fine for our 5 Gallon shower bag.

Great nights of camping

even during monsoon season, we got lucky and barely got any rain! it was a very clean and nice campsite, although the neighbors were kinda loud because of their dogs. I would recommend finding a site a little further off the beaten path so you have a little more privacy, but in all, a fantastic site!

Our go-to spot

This campground is one of our favorites in AZ and our family has been frequenting it for about 25 years now. It is convenient for hiking and fishing, and is close to the lake but far enough away to promote safety and minimize mosquito damage. There are plenty of tent and RV spots, and unlike many campgrounds the spots can be close to each other if needed, which is great when you have a group of half tent half RV folks.
