Skyway Loop Hidden Campground

Along the Skyway Loop Trail in Talladega National Forest, this hike-in campground occupies a rock cutout area positioned directly on the ridge edge. The US Forest Service maintains this free site, which accommodates a single tent and includes a fire pit within a naturally sheltered formation that provides protection from wind and weather.

Access requires hiking along the trail system, and the site sits somewhat concealed from the main path. Campers must carry water since the nearest reliable source lies 1.5-2 miles back along the ridge at a larger group facility. The rock formation creates a defensive camping spot that works particularly well during storms or cold conditions. Several other Skyway Loop Trail Turn Campground sites dot the trail system within walking distance for those exploring multiple options.

Cool Site!

This is one of the cooler campgrounds you come across along the Skyway loop trail. It is probably only large enough for a single tent but it is situated in a kind of rock cutout area right on the edge of the ridge. It is also kind of hidden away from the trail so you wouldn’t see it unless you are looking for it. Make sure to check out my review of Cheaha Falls Campground where I discuss the entire loop and the best times of year to visit. The site has a firepit and area for a tent that it actually pretty well protected from the elements. I think I would choose this site if I were in the area during winter and it was cold and windy or if I knew there might be a storm coming. The major downside is that it has no access to water like I discussed in my review of Skyways Loop Campground with view. The only consistent water source is probably 1.5-2 miles back along the ridge at the large group campground. If you are coming up from the south though and still have your water pretty full and got a late start this would be a great option to stop and stay for the night.
