    Clean, quiet and nice setting

Good, level spots. Well-spaced but not private.

About 50% full on the night we stayed and lots of really nice camping rigs. Saw no tents except ours (roof top tent).

Dollar General near the entrance and only about 20 minutes from Montgomery.

Couple of nice playgrounds for kids to run off energy.

Restrooms/showers were ok. Could use some TLC.

Definitely would stay here again. Not sure I would for a whole week though.

    Kountry Air RV Park

    Clean quiet campground

We have stayed here many times when were on the road heading  out for the summer.  We had full hook up, a picnic table & there is a small clean restroom near the pool if needed along with a laundry room & place to sit inside if it's hot out.  They have DVD's and some books we trade them where were there. We only stay a night & stay hooked up to the truck. The owners Gigi & her husband work hard to keep the gardens beautiful, the campground maintained & the pool is so clean & refreshing.  You can get propane here.

We've stayed 3 different time & had a nice site towards the back with a garden on the side.

It's off the beaten path a little but well worth it.

Could Not Have Asked for Better

I am rather new to tent camping so I really appreciated the helpful folks running the camping area.  Each spot had electricity, water, great internet, picnic table and places to build a fire.  Each site is shielded from the next by trees.  Bathrooms and showers are used but clean.  Clear maps available for hiking or biking.  Nice lake with swimming and boating.  Pet friendly.  Could not have asked for more or better.

    Montgomery South RV Park

    Great Little Campground

I stayed here for 8 weeks while travel nursing at a local hospital. I had previously moved from another campground I did not feel safe at. Boy was this place a breath of fresh air! The staff was very nice and accommodating! They patrolled the grounds on golf carts frequently. There are only two single serve bathrooms with showers on site, but they were well maintained and also had heat lamps for the wintertime. The laundry room was small with only two slightly dated washers and dryers, but they got the job done. You just had to time it to get in the queue. Each site had a picnic table, but sadly not all of them had fire pit rings. Mine was one that did not. All of the sites were gravel paved, but they were very level. The staff works hard to upkeep the sites by delivering fresh gravel to sites with a tractor when campers leave. The staff was very kind to come by and warn us when we were expecting freezing temps to help prevent our pipes from freezing. They even carried my trash bag up to the dumpster once on their golf cart so I wouldn’t have to! My biggest complaint here was the spotty WiFi, but that’s to be expected at most parks. This park is right up the street from Alabama Safari Park, and there are a few restaurants up the road near the interstate. Overall, I highly recommend this park! Loved staying here, and would definitely return again! It’s a quick hop on the interstate to get to Montgomery or Prattville.

    Chewacla State Park Campground

Easy hike and Family orientated activities

Chewalca State park has more to offer than just hiking. There are several mountain bike trails of varying diffivulties. There is also paddle boating and kayaks available for the lake. Throughout the hike there are canopies and grills where families can hang out. The hike was easy and not very long. The trail loops around the a lake and brings you to a waterfall on the back side of the lake. The waterfall is easy accessible and you can get as close as you wish. The park is also pet friendly.

    Gunter Hill

    Quiet in the Shoulder Season

In New England it's challenging to find a campground that is open in late November/early December but that's certainly not the case in the south! Sometimes I experience the opposite problem, tons of people everywhere thanks to the warmer weather. However, when we pulled into Gunter Hill this time of year we were surprised to see how empty the place was. There were a few large RVs in the area but only one other tent camper like ourselves.

The sites are nicely spaced out so even if there had been a lot of people there, it wouldn't have felt too crowded. Large old trees with beautiful Spanish moss provide plenty of shade in the sites. The river also runs pretty close to some of the sites as well. Our site had a nice paved pull in as well as a gravel area with a large picnic table and fire ring. In addition there was a stand up grill available as well. On the other side of the concrete pull in was a nice flat spot for us to pitch our tent. Plenty of room for everything here. Water and electric hookups were easily accessible right in our site. The ground below the water spigot drains well and doesn't create a large mud puddle when you use it, a piece of campground engineering I have come to greatly appreciate. The site has a nice lantern/trash pole that includes a small shelf, great for all sorts of things!

The bathrooms are nice and were all maintained. We didn't use the showers but the toilets and sinks were more than adequate for morning and evening necessities.

The location is great, right outside of the city and perfectly placed for us to stop on our road trip from the national park sites in Tuskegee and heading to them in Selma.

Despite being two females and the campground being relatively empty, we felt incredibly safe. I mention this because this is not always the case when we camp in southern states.

    Wind Creek State Park Campground

    Relaxing Lake Martin camping

Lake Martin is beautiful and there are many places to camp along it. This is the only state park along the lake and the campground closest to town (with grocery, restaurants, etc.). There are nice hiking and horseback riding trails through the woods, swimming beaches, a marina, a little cafe with boat rentals. Lots to do for all ages, from sitting watching the water to riding bikes through the roads. There are many loops to choose from but less than 25% of them are along the water. There are some furnished cabins also. Simple place to camp but quite nice.

Yay: Love the lake and boating around it.

Nay: Sites are a little crowded but there are some trees to improve privacy. Campground feels a little crowded.

Surprise: Check out Pineywood Island, kids will love to run around and entire little island.

    Quiet and peaceful

Pet friendly and LOTS of activities.

Guide to Montgomery

Cabin accommodations near Montgomery offer options ranging from lakeside units to forest retreats within an hour's drive. Most cabin sites operate year-round with a few areas like Lake Martin Recreation Area running seasonally from April through September. Montgomery sits at 240 feet above sea level with mild winters that extend camping season well past typical northern limits.

What to do

Waterfront activities: At Wind Creek State Park Campground, cabin guests can access Lake Martin for fishing and boating. "This is a great family campground with a boat launch on lake Martin. Good swimming, adequate shade," notes Anna R. The park also offers boat rentals at two locations, with motorized options available at the marina.

Tree climbing adventures: Visitors to Chewacla State Park Campground can explore mountain biking trails after leaving their cabins. "Many hiking and biking trails throughout the park, there are some very aggressive mountain bike trails with challenges to test even the expert riders," explains Tony C. The park features a waterfall built by the CCC that doubles as the lake dam.

Safari adventures: Cabin campers at Montgomery South RV Park can visit nearby wildlife attractions. "If you are trying to burn time with kids, the safari park is nearby and was a great way to burn some energy," suggests Kristen M. The park's location just off the interstate provides easy access to attractions while maintaining a comfortable base camp.

What campers like

Quiet surroundings: Kick Back Ranch & Event Center cabin renters appreciate the peaceful setting. "We stayed here from 29 Apr - 13 May 2023. We originally reserved a spot for 1 week but had such a positive experience, we extended it for another week," shares Tim G. The property features multiple water bodies, a pool, and strong wifi signal.

Friendly management: At Kountry Air RV Park, cabin guests value the personal touch. "We were greeted by Don on his golf cart, and his wife, Gigi, checked us in at the office. We received a great rundown of the local area, including restaurant suggestions that looked really good," writes MickandKarla W. Visitors consistently mention the owners checking in to ensure guest comfort.

Cabin privacy: Spacious sites make cabin stays more enjoyable. "Very long and level concrete pad. Great Verizon signal and numerous free digital TV stations to choose from," explains Rick G. about Gunter Hill. Many cabin sites provide distance between neighbors, allowing for a more private experience.

What you should know

Weather considerations: Alabama weather affects cabin camping conditions. "We were the only trailer in loop D. It was quiet and very enjoyable! Being right on the lake and having the ducks swim up really thrilled our dogs," reports Erin L. Winter visits typically offer more solitude and open availability.

Reservation windows: Book early for holiday weekends, especially at popular parks. "Booked sites with friends months ago for a one night stay on the way to Columbus, MS. As such, we were able to book FHU sites along the water," advises Rick G.

Accessibility variations: Terrain differs significantly between cabin locations. "We drove the 14 miles from the exit to the CG with no issues," reports MickandKarla W. Some sites recommend specific approach routes to avoid narrow or gravel roads.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Jackson Lake Towne of Spectre offers family-friendly grounds. "The baby goats were a fun little surprise!" mentions Jena S. Several parks feature playground equipment near bathroom facilities for convenience.

Beach options: Families appreciate designated swimming areas. "This campground is a better place for the summer not much to do in the winter. It's a place for swimming, fishing, and boat riding," notes Ginger S. Some parks maintain roped-off beach sections with platforms.

Activity planning: Bring games for downtime between adventures. "Tent camping with family during Hurricane evacuation. Beautiful park, numerous bath houses, laundry, camp store, playgrounds, mini golf, and so much more," shares Kim T. about Wind Creek State Park.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Choose sites based on cabin proximity to amenities. "For the kiddies there is also a sizable modern playground right next to the bathhouse," mentions Richard A. Sites near bathhouses offer convenience while waterfront locations provide views.

Hookup considerations: Check which cabin areas offer full services. "It seems like they were able to retain all the trees when they put the pads in, which retains the wooded feel of the campground," explains Ian D. Utilities placement varies between locations, affecting setup convenience.

Internet connectivity: Cell service varies by location. "We got 2 bars on Verizon, and their WiFi was better than most CGs this size," notes MickandKarla W. Some parks offer wifi hotspots near the office while others have campground-wide coverage.
