    Kountry Air RV Park

    Clean quiet campground

We have stayed here many times when were on the road heading  out for the summer.  We had full hook up, a picnic table & there is a small clean restroom near the pool if needed along with a laundry room & place to sit inside if it's hot out.  They have DVD's and some books we trade them where were there. We only stay a night & stay hooked up to the truck. The owners Gigi & her husband work hard to keep the gardens beautiful, the campground maintained & the pool is so clean & refreshing.  You can get propane here.

We've stayed 3 different time & had a nice site towards the back with a garden on the side.

It's off the beaten path a little but well worth it.

    Chewacla State Park Campground

Could Not Have Asked for Better

I am rather new to tent camping so I really appreciated the helpful folks running the camping area.  Each spot had electricity, water, great internet, picnic table and places to build a fire.  Each site is shielded from the next by trees.  Bathrooms and showers are used but clean.  Clear maps available for hiking or biking.  Nice lake with swimming and boating.  Pet friendly.  Could not have asked for more or better.

    Chewacla State Park Campground

Easy hike and Family orientated activities

Chewalca State park has more to offer than just hiking. There are several mountain bike trails of varying diffivulties. There is also paddle boating and kayaks available for the lake. Throughout the hike there are canopies and grills where families can hang out. The hike was easy and not very long. The trail loops around the a lake and brings you to a waterfall on the back side of the lake. The waterfall is easy accessible and you can get as close as you wish. The park is also pet friendly.

    Wind Creek State Park Campground

    Relaxing Lake Martin camping

Lake Martin is beautiful and there are many places to camp along it. This is the only state park along the lake and the campground closest to town (with grocery, restaurants, etc.). There are nice hiking and horseback riding trails through the woods, swimming beaches, a marina, a little cafe with boat rentals. Lots to do for all ages, from sitting watching the water to riding bikes through the roads. There are many loops to choose from but less than 25% of them are along the water. There are some furnished cabins also. Simple place to camp but quite nice.

Yay: Love the lake and boating around it.

Nay: Sites are a little crowded but there are some trees to improve privacy. Campground feels a little crowded.

Surprise: Check out Pineywood Island, kids will love to run around and entire little island.

    Gunter Hill

    Quiet in the Shoulder Season

In New England it's challenging to find a campground that is open in late November/early December but that's certainly not the case in the south! Sometimes I experience the opposite problem, tons of people everywhere thanks to the warmer weather. However, when we pulled into Gunter Hill this time of year we were surprised to see how empty the place was. There were a few large RVs in the area but only one other tent camper like ourselves.

The sites are nicely spaced out so even if there had been a lot of people there, it wouldn't have felt too crowded. Large old trees with beautiful Spanish moss provide plenty of shade in the sites. The river also runs pretty close to some of the sites as well. Our site had a nice paved pull in as well as a gravel area with a large picnic table and fire ring. In addition there was a stand up grill available as well. On the other side of the concrete pull in was a nice flat spot for us to pitch our tent. Plenty of room for everything here. Water and electric hookups were easily accessible right in our site. The ground below the water spigot drains well and doesn't create a large mud puddle when you use it, a piece of campground engineering I have come to greatly appreciate. The site has a nice lantern/trash pole that includes a small shelf, great for all sorts of things!

The bathrooms are nice and were all maintained. We didn't use the showers but the toilets and sinks were more than adequate for morning and evening necessities.

The location is great, right outside of the city and perfectly placed for us to stop on our road trip from the national park sites in Tuskegee and heading to them in Selma.

Despite being two females and the campground being relatively empty, we felt incredibly safe. I mention this because this is not always the case when we camp in southern states.

    Wind Creek State Park Campground

The nicest campground I’ve ever been.

All camp sites have water and power and fits the needs of most all campers, including Equine campsites

Clean grounds and the largest capacity and spacious individual sites than most

    Security in and out frequently.

Kids can run the area and you can see them almost everywhere they go

    Quiet and peaceful

Pet friendly and LOTS of activities.

    Montgomery South RV Park

    Great Little Campground

I stayed here for 8 weeks while travel nursing at a local hospital. I had previously moved from another campground I did not feel safe at. Boy was this place a breath of fresh air! The staff was very nice and accommodating! They patrolled the grounds on golf carts frequently. There are only two single serve bathrooms with showers on site, but they were well maintained and also had heat lamps for the wintertime. The laundry room was small with only two slightly dated washers and dryers, but they got the job done. You just had to time it to get in the queue. Each site had a picnic table, but sadly not all of them had fire pit rings. Mine was one that did not. All of the sites were gravel paved, but they were very level. The staff works hard to upkeep the sites by delivering fresh gravel to sites with a tractor when campers leave. The staff was very kind to come by and warn us when we were expecting freezing temps to help prevent our pipes from freezing. They even carried my trash bag up to the dumpster once on their golf cart so I wouldn’t have to! My biggest complaint here was the spotty WiFi, but that’s to be expected at most parks. This park is right up the street from Alabama Safari Park, and there are a few restaurants up the road near the interstate. Overall, I highly recommend this park! Loved staying here, and would definitely return again! It’s a quick hop on the interstate to get to Montgomery or Prattville.

What to do

Being right on the lake and having the ducks swim up really thrilled our dogs," reports Erin L. Boat rentals are available at the marina for motorized jon boats and pontoon boats.

Water activities: Wind Creek State Park Campground offers multiple water recreation options. "This is a great family campground with a boat launch on lake Martin. Good swimming, adequate shade," notes Anna R. The park includes pedal boats and canoe rentals from the Creem Shop, plus a beach area for swimming.

Adventure course: Take on the zip line and tree line adventure course at Wind Creek. "They have a zip line and tree line adventure course, mini-golf, a beach area for swimming, and plenty of fishing spots," shares Romeo M. The course is suitable for various skill levels and provides safety equipment.

Mountain biking: Chewacla State Park Campground features dedicated mountain biking trails of varying difficulties. "Many areas have killed mtb trails to ride, worth a sniff," notes Arthur G. The trails accommodate beginners to expert riders with technical features and well-maintained paths.

What campers like

Spacious sites: Gunter Hill receives consistent praise for its roomy campsites. "Large sites, shaded, have sewer hookups, concrete pads, many on a beautiful lake," shares druann B. Sites offer ample space for outdoor setups and most include concrete pads that accommodate larger RVs.

Winter camping: Campgrounds in the area offer exceptional winter experiences when crowds thin out. "Nice stay! Spacious sites with nice peaceful view! Good price and pet friendly!" writes Vera V. about Gunter Hill. The mild Alabama winters make cabin camping comfortable year-round.

Bathroom facilities: The region's campgrounds maintain clean facilities. "The bathrooms were large but could have been better maintained. All around a very nice campground," notes Ian D. about Gunter Hill. Many sites offer individual rather than community-style bathroom layouts.

Diverse activities: Cabin options at Kick Back Ranch & Event Center provide access to multiple recreation choices. "Kickback sports a pool, laundry facility, game room, general store, large tv room, hiking/bike trails, large water slide (separate from pool), and a very strong wifi signal," reports Tim G.

What you should know

Bathroom maintenance varies: Quality differs between locations. "Restroom buildings are old, falling apart, and filled with garbage. Docks are a safety hazard and I wouldn't walk on them at all," notes Theresa about Lake Martin Recreation Area. Always check recent reviews before booking.

Reservation timing: For prime waterfront cabins, book 3-6 months in advance. "We stayed at site 100 it was an excellent site right on the water next to us was like a private beach," shares Rachel G. about Wind Creek State Park.

Seasonal differences: Campground experiences change dramatically between seasons. "This campground is a better place for the summer not much to do in the winter. It's a place for swimming, fishing, and boat riding," advises Ginger S. regarding Wind Creek.

Noise levels: Some locations can be busy during peak times. "Little bit noisy at night but not unbearable. Also understandable bc there are over 500 spots," mentions Matthew M. about Wind Creek State Park.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly amenities: Wind Creek State Park offers numerous facilities for children. "We love camping at Wind Creek. Lots to do for the kiddos!" shares Jessi B. The park includes multiple playgrounds throughout the campground, accessible trails, and supervised swimming areas.

Educational opportunities: Weogufka State Forest Flagg Mtn offers historical learning experiences. "Simple and enjoyable. Caretaker and author Sunny Eberhart (Nimblewill Nomad) is wonderful to talk to. Access to southern terminus of the Pinhoti Trail. CCC tower and cabins from 1930's," reports Ro J.

Family gathering spaces: Cabin rentals at Kick Back Ranch provide common areas. "Nestled back in the woods this hidden gem is a find! Very clean, friendly staff, tons of free activities with stay, and fun for the entire family!" notes Adam T.

Wildlife encounters: Cabin locations offer opportunities to observe local fauna. "The host is so welcoming! Clean restrooms. The baby goats were a fun little surprise!" shares Jena S. about Jackson Lake Towne of Spectre.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Choose sites away from high-traffic areas for quieter stays. "We were in C section with full hook-ups. They have playgrounds throughout the campground, trails from 1 mile long to 15 miles long," notes Romeo M. about Wind Creek State Park.

Off-season advantages: Winter camping offers unique benefits. "Great location, water views. Only negative is that the wifi is not strong, but Verizon signal is great," shares Matthew K. about Wind Creek's C South section.

Connectivity considerations: Most cabin areas offer reliable cell service but variable wifi. "We got 2 bars on Verizon, and their WiFi was better than most CGs this size," reports MickandKarla W. about their stay at Kountry Air RV Park.
