Water defines the experience at Tippy Dam State Recreation Area. Set along the Manistee River backwaters in Brethren, Michigan, this forested campground sits above the shoreline, with sites positioned on elevated ground overlooking the water rather than directly at its edge. Sites are spacious and can accommodate rigs up to 60 feet, and at least one reviewer confirmed a 17-foot trailer fit comfortably alongside a tent. No electrical hookups are available, so this is a generator-dependent or tent-focused setup for anyone needing power.
Getting to the water requires some effort. Campers note that the so-called lakeside sites involve a steep drop, and what access exists comes through narrow trails or a shared staircase leading to a dock. "Campsites along the lake are high overlook campsites with narrow trails down to the water," James notes, though a common area with stairs and a dock is also available. Fishing is a consistent draw, with access to both the Manistee River and the backwater side of the dam. Boat launch access is available on both sides.
Sites have relatively few trees within their boundaries, which limits shade and makes hammock setups difficult without moving beyond the campsite perimeter. Cell service is reported as reliable. Pit toilets and hand-pump water are on-site, and the campground is open year-round. Noise enforcement appears inconsistent based on reviews, with at least one late-night disturbance on a holiday weekend going unaddressed. Nearby, Tunk Hole River Access Site and Manistee National Forest Sawdust Hole River Access provide additional riverside options along the same stretch of water.
