Hiking into the White Mountains gets easier when you're based at Moose Brook State Park Campground in Gorham, New Hampshire, where northern trailheads are close at hand and the park itself has trails winding through the surrounding terrain. Anglers and swimmers have a fishing pond and a cold-water swimming hole fed by mountain runoff, complete with a platform for jumping in. The Presidential Rail Trail is accessible directly from the park, running roughly 18 miles to Pondicherry Wildlife Preserve on a moderate crushed-gravel grade, with the return trip mostly downhill. Moose and bear sightings have been reported in the area by multiple visitors.
The campground is laid out in a few distinct loops, and site character varies noticeably depending on where you land. The outer loop tends to have more separation between sites, while the inner loop opens into a wider field with less natural screening. Reviewers consistently recommend sites 5, 6, 7, 8, the dead-end loop at 11, 12, and 13, and site 37 for privacy. Site 3 sits close to the brook, where the sound of moving water carries through the night. Heather E. notes "quiet and pretty private spots, outer loop a bit more," which tracks with what other reviewers describe about the layout.
Facilities are consistently well-reviewed. The shower building and bathrooms draw repeated praise for cleanliness, and a wash station with hot water makes dishwashing practical. Showers cost $0.75 for three minutes. The ranger station doubles as a camp store where firewood runs $6 per bundle. Full hookups, including electric, water, and sewer, are available for RVs up to 40 feet, though at least one reviewer notes the park feels oriented toward tent campers. WiFi is listed as an amenity, and Sprint cell reception has been confirmed at some sites.
Gorham sits just east of the campground, putting grocery stores, restaurants, and a Walmart within a short drive for resupply. Campers who want to compare places to camp near Moose Brook State Park will find nearby options including Cedar Stump Campground and White Birches Camping Park to the east. Reservations are available and worth booking ahead, as the park fills during peak summer weekends. The season runs May through early November, and the campground's position on the northern side of Mount Washington, away from the heavier traffic corridors of the Kancamagus Highway, tends to keep crowd levels lower than comparable sites in the region. This campground works well for hikers, anglers, and RV travelers who want a maintained state park base with full hookups and direct trail access.
