The Bluff- Great Gulf Wilderness

The Great Gulf Wilderness is located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, just below the Presidential Range. The Bluff campsite specifically is accessible from Route 16, requiring a hike in to reach the camping area. The wilderness area sits in a dramatic glacial cirque surrounded by the towering peaks of the Presidential Range, offering spectacular views of Mount Washington and the surrounding mountains.

No permits are required for camping at The Bluff in Great Gulf Wilderness, but standard White Mountain National Forest backcountry regulations apply. This includes proper food storage, Leave No Trace principles, and camping only in designated sites. Group sizes may be restricted, and during high fire danger periods, campfire restrictions might be in effect. Always check with the WMNF ranger station for current regulations before your trip.

The Great Gulf Wilderness offers several hiking trails of varying difficulty. The main access trail from Route 16 is relatively easy with a gradual uphill trend, becoming steeper near The Bluff campsite. From this base, more challenging trails lead up to the Presidential Range, including paths to Mount Washington and other peaks. A water source trail descends just downhill from the campsite, providing access to fresh water. The area's trail system offers opportunities for both day hikes and multi-day backpacking adventures.
